KOAJ, So far these furlough have not affected public safety personnel in terms of work furloughs (on the local level). The budget mess has cut back on equipment, overtime allotment, and monies for firefighting/water dropping personnel and equipment on the state level on the Parks.
These clowns in Sacramento are pathetic. The repubs signed this "contract" to the people a year or 2 ago, then you have several of them now voting to increase taxes to shorten the budget gap.
We should do what Texas does, have the legislature be part time employees, meeting only 45 days EVERY OTHER YEAR. Cali has like 30% of the nations welfare costs while Tex has like 3% of the costs. And Texas has no budget deficit...............

@ Bake - I think it's 150x every two years by law. But still, Texas is the epitome of the "live and let live" state. No state taxes...if only it wasn't so damn hot.

My bad, CK, got my facts confused with what some are suggesting the CA legislature should so out here... and Im in 100% agreement that TX is an example to follow as far as state politics are concerned fiscally speaking.

true statement esp for public service employees like police-firemen or those that are in actual control of an operation like airline pilots, truck drivers, railroad engineers or the air traffic controllers (fed employees). you can do one hell of a lot more damage to management by staying on the job and working strictly within the contract than by walking off.
btw, once again KOAJ want's everyone else working for minimum wage with NO benefits. I guess his model for success is Communist China.

Strikes work great!! Espeecially when there is high unemployment. (sarc) Iwitnessed a strike first hand that resulted in 250 guys "quitting", the company received 4000 applications for replacement workers,(mine too).
After a rough transition, about 3-6 months, the productivity was higher with the new workers so the company increased pay for the new rehirees above those of the "whiners".
To this day there are still mostly non-union workers there, the productivity is good, working conditions are good and wages are still good. All in all it was a big win for everybody, except the union boys that went on strike.
