When it comes to college football betting, few teams have been as disappointing as the Oklahoma Sooners. As a Longhorn, I get no satisfaction in saying that because I’m immediately reminded that Texas is even worse. That’s indicative of how bad the Big 12 has been this season. Not even the Sooners can carry the torch for the conference.

It’s the visual equivalent of the occasional video showing the Sooner Schooner accidentally flipping on its side. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.

Let’s look at our best college football free picks and predictions for Oklahoma vs. TCU, with kickoff set for noon Saturday, October 24 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Sooners are led by quarterback Spencer Rattler, who was benched and then re-inserted into the game against Texas two weeks ago, throwing for 209 yards and three touchdowns in an epic 53-45 victory in four overtimes. Rattler has a ton of talent, but he’s still a freshman who has plenty of room for improvement. The same can be said for the Oklahoma defense, which is giving up, ahem, 40 points a game in its last three contests. Not great!

Perhaps no coach in college football regularly gets more out of his teams than Gary Patterson, but the TCU head coach has faced even more of a challenge in 2020. Haven’t we all? Patterson’s group sits at 1-2 and is coming off a 21-14 loss to Kansas State. Quarterback Max Duggan runs the show for the Horned Frogs, having thrown for 626 yards and three touchdowns this year. Duggan can also tuck it and run, and he leads the team with 132 yards on the ground. In other words, TCU could use more offensive weapons.

While TCU generally has one of the best defenses in the country, the Frogs are giving up almost 30 points per contest this year, and their offense isn’t multi-faceted enough to keep place with an Oklahoma team averaging 502 yards per game.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma -6.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

One look at these leaky defenses and I see why leaning toward the Over might be the play. However, the Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings between the Sooners and Frogs, and I’m not sure TCU can move the ball against OU like most teams have been able to. I’m on the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 63.5 (-110)

Team Total Prop Pick

Rattler responded well to his temporary benching against Texas, and the extra week to prepare will help him against TCU. The Sooners can also do damage on the ground with TJ Pledger, who gashed the Longhorns for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

I think the Sooners put up plenty of points in this one and then get to work on keeping that Schooner upright for a while.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma team total Over 34.5 (-120)
