The LSU Tigers face the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in Game 2 of the College World Series on Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Tigers are one win away from capturing their eighth title, whereas the Chanticleers must bounce back quickly after having their 26-game winning streak snapped a day ago. I’m pouncing on the Under with my college baseball free picks for Sunday, June 22.

Coastal Carolina vs LSU prediction

My Coastal Carolina vs LSU best bet: Under 8.5 (-125 at bet365)

Weather is always a factor when it’s time for the Greatest Show on Dirt. The weather in Omaha can be a significant factor in every handicap, especially when considering the total.

It’ll be hot on Sunday with temperatures around 95 degrees at the time of first pitch, but the most notable thing about the forecast is the wind. Winds of 22 mph with gusts of up to 51 mph will be blowing in and toward left field, which will make offense difficult to come by, especially in such a spacious ballpark.

My best bet in Game 1 was on the Under, and it came through in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel. Coastal managed just three hits while striking out 10 times, and LSU’s sole run came off a lead-off walk in the first inning. That may be a sign of things to come, and with advantageous wind and another tantalizing starting pitcher matchup, I’m going right back to the well.

Jacob Morrison gets the nod for Coastal Carolina. There’s been a lot of chatter about how elite the Chanticleers’ pitching staff is — it’s true, too —  and Morrison is the best of the bunch. The towering 6-foot-8 right-hander accumulated a 12-0 record with a 2.08 ERA and 0.91 WHIP, and batters are hitting just .194 against him.

Coastal is 16-1 in games that he’s started, so this is exactly who the Chanticleers need on the mound with their season on the line. He can pump a mid-90s fastball against an LSU lineup that has struggled against heat in the College World Series.

Coach Kevin Schnall decided to save his ace for Game 2, and that made me heavily consider the Chancticleers on the moneyline at -105 with my best bet. However, I opted for the Under instead, given LSU’s advantageous pitching situation.

Anthony Eyanson takes the hill sporting an 11-2 record and 2.92 ERA, striking out 143 batters across 101 2/3 innings pitched. The sports world marvelled at teammate Kade Anderson’s complete game shutout in Game 1, so consider that Eyanson’s ERA is actually lower than Anderson’s (3.18).

Coach Jay Johnson has a fully-rested bullpen thanks to Anderson’s heroics, so he’ll have a quick trigger if Eyanson uncharacteristically struggles. Freshman star Casan Evans and 100-mph reliever Chase Shores are the two most notable names, but LSU’s pitching staff is deep with elite talent, and all of it will be at 100% and fully available.

I can’t take anything away from Coastal — after all, it won 26 consecutive games and blew right past competition en route to Omaha. Still, it’s to be determined if the lineup is up to the task of generating offense against a fully stocked and deadly LSU pitching staff.

Coastal’s bullpen is also in great shape after Game 1 starter Cameron Flukey threw six innings, setting the stage for yet another pitching duel on Sunday. Sign me up for the Under.
