Roulette is one of the most popular Las Vegas table games. On the Vegas Strip, only blackjack and baccarat have more tables. Downtown, roulette ranks second behind blackjack.
It’s one of the few games where you’ll see players standing and either cheering or groaning, depending on the result. While roulette may appear chaotic, players quickly learn that there must be some semblance of organization.
New roulette players in Las Vegas would be wise to stand back for a couple of spins to see how the organized chaos works. It’ll help when they finally approach the game.
The newest gamblers in Las Vegas are 21-years-old. Nobody at this age or older wants to look like they don’t know what to do when they hit the roulette table.
Have no fear, we have some basic roulette etiquette tips to help everyone have a good time at the tables. A little courtesy and efficiency while playing goes a long way in keeping the game moving smoothly.
👀 Watch Your Space at the Table
Las Vegas roulette tables are small but have room for six players. A full table can get tight with players reaching across one another to place bets.
Be mindful of the space you’re standing in and where you’re reaching. Nobody likes strangers encroaching on their personal space.
Additionally, it’s easy to bump into other players, knock over chips, or bump someone a little too aggressively while placing bets across the table since there’s a rush between spins.
If you or a friend isn’t playing, stand behind the players so you’re not taking up space from others who want to join the game.
💵 Know When and How to Buy In
Buying into a roulette game can be tricky because the action moves fast. The first thing to know is that dealers can’t take money directly from your hand. You’ll need to place cash or regular casino chips on the table.
Timing is everything when buying into a roulette game. There’s not much time between spins to buy in before the next round begins.
Speak up and clearly tell the dealer you’re buying in and want roulette chips so they know you’re not placing a bet with casino chips or cash. They’ll probably recognize you’re a new player, but it’s better to be clear.
The dealer will then exchange your cash or casino chips for roulette chips.
💰 Roulette Has Unique Chips
Roulette uses different chips from other casino games. While you can play with regular casino chips, it’s easier for everyone if you use the ones specific to roulette.
Dealers encourage players to use their own colored chips because they make it easier for both you and the dealer to track your bets. Regular casino chips all look the same, which can create confusion.
Anyone playing could claim a generic chip is theirs if it wins. That’s not the case with roulette chips where each player has their own color chips.
At the end of the day, sticking with roulette chips keeps things simple for everyone at the table.
Planning a trip to Las Vegas and want to make the most of your time in Sin City? It's a good idea to do your research before you arrive, so we've created a series of guides to help maximize your bankroll:
🚫 Don't Throw Chips
Even though roulette tables are small, they’re often longer than your arms if you’re standing at one end. It can be tough to reach certain numbers or columns.
Your first instinct might be to stretch or toss a chip toward the number you want. Don’t throw chips on the table.
If you can’t reach, ask the dealer for help and place your chips as close as possible to where you want them. The dealer will be happy to place them for you.
🦻 No More Bets!
Shortly after spinning the ball, the dealer will say and signal, “no more bets.” It’s important to respect this call.
Any bets placed after “No more bets” won’t count. Do this too many times, and a dealer might ask you to leave. That’s lame and embarrassing.
1️⃣ Watch Your Stack: Part 1
Like all casino games, you’re responsible for your chips. Unlike other games, chips can be grabbed while you’re reaching to place bets.
Keep an eye on your money because nobody else will. It’s easy to get caught up in the fever of playing roulette and forget.
2️⃣ Watch Your Stack: Part 2
Be considerate to the dealer when placing your bets. Avoid being sloppy with your chips.
Use neat stacks so the dealer can easily see your bets and pay out quickly. The cleaner your stacks, the faster you get paid.
Additionally, the dealer will appreciate this. It never hurts to be on their good side.
👐 Keep Your Hands to Yourself
It might seem obvious, but when you’re rushing to place bets, it’s easy to forget. Don’t touch other players’ chips on the table. That means both their bets and their personal stacks.
If you’re betting on the same number as someone else, place your chips on top of theirs.
💲 Be Quick
There isn’t much time between spins at the roulette table. Stay alert so you can place all your bets before the dealer says “no more bets.”
Nothing feels worse than the ball landing on the number you wanted to bet on and being too late for it to count and win that 35-1 wager!
🫢 Don't Be Loud
This isn’t about censoring what you want to say. Roulette tables are small and everyone can hear everything, even over the music.
Chatting loudly with a friend across the table can confuse or annoy other players and dealers. Just be mindful of your surroundings.
It doesn’t take much to be considerate of other players.
📞 Stay Off Your Phone at the Table
Players aren’t allowed to use mobile phones for any reason while sitting or standing at a Las Vegas table game. Dealers and pit bosses will call it out every time they spot someone on their phone.
If you need to check or send messages, just take a couple of steps away from the table for a moment. It’s a bit annoying, but it’s not a big deal and you’ll be able to stay at the table.
😈 Don't Be a Jerk
We all love to win. Celebrating is part of what makes playing roulette in Las Vegas so much fun.
But remember, not everyone wins every spin. Be considerate of your fellow players and don’t gloat too much. Your wins might be their losses.
It’s great to cheer for yourself and others. Roulette is way more enjoyable when everyone’s rooting for each other, and it’s best when everyone is on the same page.
💰 Color Up When Leaving
Roulette chips are only valid for that game. After your session, exchange them with the dealer for regular casino chips you can use elsewhere, or cash them out at the casino cage.
