The Los Angeles Kings are one of the best Under teams in the league, and that trend has been exasperated lately with five or fewer total goals scored in each of its past five games. The Under is 5-0 over that stretch.
This trend exists due to a couple of factors. First, the offense has gone cold as the Kings are averaging just 2.2 goals scored over those five games.
On the season, they now rank in the bottom half of the league in goals scored per game and shooting percentage. Second, the goaltending has been tremendous as Cam Talbot is once again expected to start between the pipes.
He is coming off a shutout against the Chicago Blackhawks, a game that resulted in a 5-0 victory for Los Angeles. I believe we will see a similar result on Tuesday.
Talbot now boasts a .917 SV% and 2.43 GAA through 43 appearances in the crease this year. Now, his job is certainly made easier by the fact that he plays behind one of the best defensive teams in hockey.
At 5-on-5, the Kings rank sixth in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). With this combination of great defensive play and excellent goaltending, it is not shocking that they rank in the top five in goals allowed per game, shots on goal allowed per game and penalty kill percentage.
It’s incredibly tough to score against this group, especially if you are a Hawks offense that ranks in the bottom five in goals scored per game, shots on goal per game, power play percentage, and shooting percentage. They are even worse analytically, ranking last in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) at 5-on-5.

Another reason to like the Under in this contest is that goaltender Petr Mrazek is expected to guard the cage for Chicago. Despite playing against this disaster of a team, Mrazek has put together a tremendous campaign with a .907 SV% and 3.03 GAA through 47 appearances between the pipes.
This success is likely to continue against a below-average Kings offense, especially given Mrazek’s incredible history against them. Through seven career appearances against Los Angeles, he is 3-2-1 with a commanding .957 SV% and 1.32 GAA.
There were five or fewer total goals scored in six of those seven outings. Combining the Under with the Kings moneyline is a good way to back such a massive favorite at plus-money.

The Kings opened as a -360 favorite and are holding steady at that mark. I do not know how much the market will want to push a team towards the four-dollar mark, but there is really not a single reason to like Chicago here as Los Angeles is better offensively, defensively, in net, on special teams, and in the faceoff circle.
That brings us to the total, which opened at 5.5 and also remains at that number. If you like the Under, I suggest locking it in sooner rather than later as the market is only to keep pushing this line down.
Both goaltenders are strong, both offenses are below average, and the trends all point to a low-scoring game.
