My analysis
The New York Yankees were looking for someone to step up in place of injured ace Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt has done so in a big way.
The 28-year-old righty has posted some excellent numbers thus far; the Yankees de facto ace is 4-1 with a 2.95 ERA and nearly 10 punchouts per nine frames. Those numbers improve dramatically on the road as his ERA dips to 1.99 and solid .308 BABIP.
His sweeper has been exceptional against righties, and his cutter-slider combo has been difficult for lefties to hit. As a result, Schmidt has surrendered fewer than three earned runs in each of his eight starts and only five earned runs across four away starts (22 1/3 innings).
Schmidt meets a sometimes explosive lefty-heavy Minnesota Twins lineup today, but he could be in for some luck as they boast a high strikeout rate and have plated only one run across the first two games of this series.
The Yankees hurler has pitched well this season, but the Bronx Bombers lumber comes alive when he mans the bump; they plate nearly five runs per Schmidt start and they’ll score enough runs today against Twins righty Joe Ryan.
Ryan has been good for the Twins but is 1-2 at Target Field; he’s striking out 10 per nine but boasts a 49% fly-ball rate that’s resulted in four bombs to righties. He’ll see a healthy diet of those bats today, including a red-hot Aaron Judge.
The Yankees are 7-1 when Schmidt makes the start, have won three straight at Target Field and five of their last seven against the Twins. Expect those trends to continue today.
