I'm sick of people calling Islam a violent religion. Christians kill just as many non-believers with car bombs and beheadings. If you don't believe me just ask Rosie O'Donnell...

honestly, while this is obviously a tragedy, extremists muslims are pretty far down on the list of things i worry about. i focus on the things that have a direct and likely affect on me and my family and the crazy and hateful people in this country are much higher on this list. it's terrible when these fucked up muslims do whatever they do wherever they do it, but they just don't have much influence here despite the fact that the media loves covering muslim violence 24/7 and the politicians love scaring people with threats of muslim violence to pursue whatever agenda they have.

Serious question. Don't know if you live in US, but if you do, does it bother you? Wouldn't you be happier living somewhere else? I know you're a leftist, but in this day and age, with the way you talk, seems like you'd be a lot happier somewhere else.
I love my life in the United States but I can't stand morons. Americans love to look down on people. Americans love to point the finger. I'm not even necessarily against what the US does to dominate the world but I live in reality. I know there's a price to pay and I know people around the world go without so Americans can live the way we do.
You can draw as many cartoons of Muhammad as you want, just don't be surprised when guys holding assault rifles come looking for you. I love the first amendment but I'm not gonna get smart with som wacko that could knock my head off of my body. Sometimes you need to use your brain.

Here is a quote from me from yesterday on Alpha's thread about Radical Lefties:
The radical left is as strong today as they were in the 60's. Remember
the Black Panthers at the polling place in Philadelphia? You ever hear
of Bill Ayers, Ward Churchill, and the thousand of other college
professors who equate the United States to Muslim Terrorists (not to
mention some posters here on Covers who will go unnamed).

Christians make up 80% of our military. Are they better because they used unmanned drones, jets, real bombs, and helicopters?

You can think you're good if you want. In reality you post links to white supremacy websites touting clearly racist articles. In my world you're just a run of the mill white guy from the south that believes the propaganda he's been taught. It's ok, it's not entirely your fault.

Religion, a mediaeval form of unreason, when combined with modern weaponry becomes a real threat to our freedoms. This religious totalitarianism has caused a deadly mutation in the heart of Islam and we see the tragic consequences in Paris today. I stand with Charlie Hebdo, as we all must, to defend the art of satire, which has always been a force for liberty and against tyranny, dishonesty and stupidity. ‘Respect for religion’ has become a code phrase meaning ‘fear of religion.’ Religions, like all other ideas, deserve criticism, satire, and, yes, our fearless disrespect.

I can respect that, but I find the last part interesting that you wrote. Not saying this is your opinion, but if this was Jesus instead of muhammad this wouldn't happen. Christians may be annoying to the left but generally the worst their gonna get is an idiot like Fred Phelps. No severed heads or mass murders targeting left wing establishments. This is a reason I have a hard time respecting athiests viewpoints. While Islam and Christianity are both religions (with alot of parallels) athiests will target Christians or protestant religions almost exclusively. That's because they know Christians won't put their head on a stick.

can't let that go unchecked over there. the war is the way these Muslim extremists have moved to Europe to drain their resources and have as much offspring as possible. any satirical joke and they go nuts. they're the complete opposite of what we stand for. you don't fight it over there, eventually, it's going to try and come here.

Have you seen the 12 cartoons they have released over the past few years? How would you feel if someone used satirical cartoons right after 9/11? I have a feeling your support for the "art of satire" would go out the window.
They don't even like people drawing Muhammad in art, depicting him as gaay in cartoons etc is way over the line in my book.

i saw that last sentence somewhere today. every rationale, thinking person should appreciate it, whether religious or not.

Guys like Lawrence Krauss, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, David Silverman, and Richard Dawkins are not afraid (or were, in HItchens case) of speaking out against Islam the same way they are against any other religion.

I agree with you more often than I don't, however I disagree with your opinion on this one.
Drawing cartoons about someone's religion shouldn't result in getting killed. I wouldn't like someone drawing cartoons about 9/11 but I wouldn't take arms and seek out to kill them or others around them.

I would have been upset if someone made cartoons making light of 9/11, but as Potter said a few posts ago, I wouldn't have bombed, shot, or beheaded someone for doing it.
Remember, Freedom of Speech wasn't created to protect speech you agree with. It was created to protect speech you don't agree with.

I think it is a very valid point that Christians and other Jesus based religions (I am including Judaism in this) are generally not killing people today (and I underline both because we know their are wacko extremists and history certainly speaks for itself) due to religious differences.
Some of this involves an analysis of why people kill in the first place. Do we really think it is because of religion? Normal people don't kill (not including military obviously).
So why is it happening in these situations? Why did ethnic cleansing happen a just over a decade ago in Europe (think Kosovo)? Why are most modern day terrorist attacks Muslim related?
For the overwhelming majority of people, organized religion is a basis to believe in something higher and to live a righteous life. For the very few, it is a basis to kill. Is it religion that makes it so, or the ability to attach an evil or twisted mind to something and blame those others for your place in life (which not coincidentally, is also the mind of a terrorist).

I'm not saying they should have been killed. If you walk through Kobani wearing American flag swim trunks and a George Bush wife beater, I don't think you should be killed, but it isn't a smart decision.

You wouldn't have bombed, shot or beheaded them.. Just like a billion Muslims wouldn't have killed these people because of the cartoons.
If a Muslim wrote a snarky article two days after 9/11/01.. And New Yorkers knew where he lived and worked.. I wouldn't like his chances. If 3 New Yorkers beat the guy to death, that doesn't mean all New Yorkers would have done the same thing.

I'd say the radical Muslim stuff that we have seen for the last few decades has a lot of factors at play. Bin Laden covered a lot of their feelings in his "Letter to America". When your surroundings are extremely turbulent, history shows us that people tend to fall back on religion to give them a sense or purpose. If the citizens of the US were faced with similar situations I think we would rally around God/our christian beliefs and would be doing a lot of the same stuff.

He was then asked what would it take for him to stop doing so and he responded, if the Church or the Christians became violent or threatened violence against me.
