A buddy of mine came up from Florida and we were driving up to Akron to Tim "Ripper" Owens' bar to see a band. The discussion turned to cannabis and he told me "that stuff's bad news". I just replied with "Nah... it's good news".
He's a good friend of mine, but he's the type to pretty much just agree with mass media. Whatever the masses say, then he agrees with it without challenging anything.
I wish I had the moment back. I would have asked why he thinks so. I don't think he realizes that marijuana has never killed anyone, and that alcohol kills probably well over a million people a year if you include accidents on the road.
People smoke cigarettes by the billions, and die by the billions as a result. I don't think he realizes that there are millions of people across the globe that NEED marijuana for medicinal purposes because the man made alternatives would literally ruin their kidneys, pancreas, liver, etc.
I would have told him that Harry Anslinger in the 1930's -- the commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics told the American public that marijuana leads to "insanity, rape, and murder, and much to the chagrin of the American Medical Assn, persuaded congress to make marijuana illegal. I would bet that he doesn't know any of this as he comes from a pretty conservative Christian family.
I dropped the ball because I didn't say anything. I'll have to make sure I do next time.
