Report: University of Hawaii investigated for point-shaving

Hawaii football is being investigated for point shaving, school officials announced Tuesday, and a Vegas source is pointing to the Nov. 5 Utah State game.

The investigation, first reported by a Honolulu TV station, was triggered by an anonymous letter that implicated an unnamed player or players on Nov. 3. Two days later, favored Hawaii squandered a 28-7 halftime lead and lost to the visiting Aggies, 35-31.

In addition to the blown lead, the game also featured significant early line movement. The Las Vegas Wynn opened Hawaii as a 7.5-point favorite over the Aggies on Sunday, Oct. 30, but the number was down to 3.5 by the next morning. According to the Covers.com line history, the Warriors opened as high as 9-point favorites at one offshore book.

The majority of Nevada and offshore sportsbooks opened the game at Hawaii -4 or -3.5 and the line bounced around that number until kickoff.

“There was some wise-guy buzz about that game even before these allegations surfaced,” a Las Vegas industry source told Covers.com Tuesday night.

Las Vegas professional handicapper Ted Sevransky watched the entire game and said, "if that game was 'fixed' in any way, I sure as hell didn't see it."

No sportsbook in Nevada or offshore had confirmed to Covers.com any unusual betting patterns on Hawaii games this season as of late Tuesday night, and school officials have not indicated that the allegations involved this season.

Honolulu police said Tuesday that there is currently not enough evidence to open a criminal investigation.

Hawaii is around a 17-point home favorite over Tulane, but multiple offshore sportsbooks had taken the game off the board as of 10 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

Hawaii is 5-6 straight up and 4-7 against the spread. The Warriors are 1-5 ATS since Oct. 14.

The evidence seems a little weak to me. Haven't heard of too many teams shaving points who loose the game outright. More often then not they just don't cover the number.

That's not the only game they should look at. I've been following both the Washington and Washington St. teams the whole season but especicially close the last 3 games and something smells rotten in Denmark and it's not the fish. Not to pick on these two teams alone, since this problem seems to be endemic throughout the sporting industry. I don't know if we need Hoover the FBI director or the vacuum cleaner; but whoever is suppossed to watch for these dirty deals, isn't doing their job. I wonder who's paying them. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink

This is funny I just got back to the office,i had to meet my man for coffee and he is hooked up with the costa rica crew and he was telling me that one of there insiders said the fbi is looking into two nfl officiating crews. So when i seen this post I justed has a good laugh. For all of you that think a game can not be tainted, college and pro football is 200 billion dollar a year business.

HIGHSCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS DON'T PLAY FIXED GAME. WHY? BECAUSE THERE ARE NO ODDS TO BET ON. AS LONG AS VEGAS PUT THE ODDS ON THE BOARD FOR COLLEGE AND PRO GAMES THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE FIXED. IT'S OK FOR VEGAS TO FIX GAMES BUT NOT A PLAYERS ,LOL... IF ANYONE HERE THINKS THE GAMES WERE NOT FIXED ,THEN YOU WILL BE BROKE SOON. HERE'S THE HINT. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN PEOPLE LOST THEIR $$$$$$ BY HALF A POINT? W-L, or O-U BY HALF A POINT? ONLY THE IDIOTS BELIEVE IT.

I find it funny that the majority of the games that are being complained about, were Hawaii road games. Most teams dont play well on the road, with Hawaii being one of them. They normally cover at home. Saturday they were playing a 3rd string QB. Just because someone loses money, they want to cry foul. Give it up folks. How about instead of whining when your team doesn't cover, do a better job handicapping. These kids are no different than anyone else when they have to fly into a different time zone. It makes people sluggish when you lose hours. Your team doesnt cover, GET OVER IT. Stop trying to cause trouble. Hawaii was at home vs utah st dumbass

The Hawaii basketball team is also being bought off. Keep betting against them.

I took one game and it was the Hawaii blowout vs UNLV. UNVL should not of won by three touchdowns to any team. It was very strange to see the team play like they forgot how the game of football works. None of these folks are going pro so a little extra money...

I knew it ! How do you lose to the worst team in NCAA football ? UNLV beats Hawaii being a 20 point dog. UNLV is thw worst but being at that game it was talked about for weeks that the UH boys gave the game away. MONIZ looked like he was throwing the game. And yes, his brother is a local bookie.

I've been saying this for years. College kids with not a lot of money will take payouts to alter games. The whole system needs altered from the bowl payola on down. Every year there are scandals and this is just the latest. The whole think stinks and last nights OHIO game reeks of the same. Could be refs and certainly can be students willing to flub here and there. Watched one of the worst QB's in NCAA last night run right by defenders just standing there. TIME TO CHANGE THE WHOLE THING!!! No more protecting precious PSU type programs either that value meat head players and boy molesting coaches over common decency!

When I look at a game for the second half, -4 and a score of 28-7 means maybe the losing team might have a good second half. It's made me a couple bucks here and there. Doesn't surprise me in the least. I hope they don't crucify these poor kids because somebody lost $20.00. There wouldn't have been enough coming in on the game anyways, except for the losers trying to make it all back. Good luck this week y'all.

I haven't taken Hawaii all year and really don't take them during any season because I live on the east coast and don't get to see their games. I like picking teams that I have seen play. I just think you get a better feel for how the team plays and how each of their games have gone. That being said, how does anyone feel about taking Hawaii now? Due to the recent allegations it would seem fair to beleive that Hawaii would want to start covering some spreads maybe to take some of the heat off of them. Also public opinion doesn't seem too positive on behalf of Hawaii, alot of people may try and fade them. Any thoughts on this?

No need to shave points when you suck.

Since they can't find any evidence of point shaving,I guess that we shouldn't send the Honolulu police looking for the birth certificate..

I thought that game was funny. A person i get picks from had that game as one of his picks and he only has at most 2 picks a day. Plus, Utah St. is know to let down in the fourth quarter. Look at their Auburn, BYU, Fresno St., and La. Tech. games up to that point. Seriously, four fourth quarter let downs before the Hawai'i game and then all of the sudden they score 28 points in the second half. Utah St. is a running team and they outpass a passing minded Hawai'i team. I quit paying attention to that game until the next day and thought something was up. That being said, when I was in college I realized how easy it was to "fix" games since I knew a guy that was a starter on the basketball team. Honestly, a few people pool together a couple grand and you would be suprised how many players can be bought off. Especially, the ones that know they aren't going to make it in the pro's or the ones that see the money and can't turn it down. The trick is give them half the money first and after the bookie pays out, give them the rest or even a few hundred for a "good" performance. Cash leaves no trail. A lot of people I went to college with had lots of disposable income or got thousands after high school to make it through college. So it's not that hard to get enough people on board especially if you're in a frat. Unfortunately, I think this kind of stuff happens more often than people think.

Hawaii no need to shave points, they are so crappy. lose to UNLV as 20 points fav, lose to a crappy SJS, did not cover against NMSU and they could have. barely beat ID. lose to Fresno, lose to NV. they are crap, so why shave? no bowl, no coach, no qb, noo crap

"Posted by cmo1037.......... 49 minutes ago............. ...or the sept. 10th game where i had them at +6.5 and with a minute and a half, they score a TD to make it 38-32, then they LET washington block the extra point AND return it for 2 points for a 40-32 washington win. shavin' motherfuckers" wow, CMO... didn't know that happened in that game! are you aware that ALSO FUCKING HAPPENED in the SJ St game??? Hawaii was (-6)... leading, 21-20, Hawaii scored a 4th quarter TD to go up 27-20, XP pending... at this point, they are covering the spread... SJ St blocks the XP and returns it for 2 pts, and now SJ St is covering the spread... there is just no doubt in my mind these rumors are true! in fact, i want to make that my PLAY OF THE YEAR! more of a lock than any football game that's been played this year... GUILTY!

Been saying it all season, particularly after sitting in the stands at UNLV and being disgusted with the "Low Level" of play in the game and then to see Moniz come walking into the casino the following day, with no shame!
