Gillespie vs Riddell betting preview

Gregor "The Gift" Gillespie enters this fight as the No. 15-ranked lightweight contender in the UFC, despite not fighting since November of 2019. In his previous fight, he suffered the first loss of his career when he got knocked out by Kevin Lee in the first round.

Prior to that defeat, Gillespie had reeled off six straight wins under the UFC banner with five of those coming by finish. The 34-year-old is an elite wrestler with powerful takedowns and top control.

Brad "Quake" Riddell comes into the octagon fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Alex da Silva last September. He is now riding a six-fight winning streak and is 3-0 in the UFC.

The 29-year-old comes from a professional kickboxing background and trains at City Kickboxing in New Zealand, alongside Israel Adesanya and Dan Hooker. Like them, he is a dyed-in-the-wool striker who sets up his shots with feints and good use of angles.

Gillespie vs Riddell UFC prediction and betting pick

PREDICTION: Gillespie by KO/TKO or submission (+120) - While there are valid concerns about Gillespie having ring rust after 16 months of inactivity, Riddell is a good stylistic matchup for him. Quake is an excellent striker but he hasn't shown knockout power in recent bouts and has a difficult time staying on his feet.

Riddell has been taken down a whopping 14 times across three UFC fights and now faces a guy who averages a whopping 7.02 takedowns per 15 minutes. Although Riddell bounced back on his feet in those bouts he won't be able to do that against Gillespie, who is a far better wrestler than his previous opponents.

Look for Gillespie to take Riddell down early and often, and control him on the ground. And with Gillespie's last five wins coming by stoppage look for him to finish Riddell either by submission or via strikes from ground-and-pound.
