Mitchell Marner scored his second goal of the game at 2:51 of overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-3 win over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

Marner extended his goal-scoring streak to eight games when he beat Frederik Andersen with 5:48 remaining in the third period, then gave the Maple Leafs their sixth straight victory when he knocked in a rebound for his 16th goal of the season.

Auston Matthews also scored two goals, giving him 31 for the season, before leaving the game in the final minute of regulation time with an apparent head injury. John Tavares and Morgan Rielly each had two assists, and Petr Mrazek, who played the previous three seasons with Carolina, made 28 saves.

Tony DeAngelo had a goal and an assist and Derek Stepan and Nino Niederreiter each scored for the Hurricanes, who had their four-game winning streak end. Andersen, who signed with the Hurricanes last summer after five seasons with Toronto, made 28 saves.

The Hurricanes defeated the Maple Leafs 4-1 at Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 25.

Niederreiter made it 1-0 when he scored his 14th goal of the season at 13:08 of the first period on a deflection of Ian Cole's pass. Martin Necas had regained the puck after being thwarted on a wraparound and fed Cole in the right circle.

Matthews was given credit for the tying goal when the puck wobbled over the line at 16:16 of the second on Toronto's third power play of the period. William Nylander took the initial stab at the puck in the crease, and was originally given credit for the goal, during a scramble around the net with Cole off for tripping.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead when Matthews scored at 19:37 on a one-timer from the slot off a pass from Reilly.

DeAngelo tied it 2-2 when he beat Mrazek eight seconds into the third period with a wrist shot from the right circle. It was his eighth goal of the season. Stepan jammed home his seventh from the edge of the crease at 9:23 of the second to put Carolina ahead 3-2.

Marner pounced on a loose puck and tied the game at 14:12 of the middle period.

Alexander Kerfoot nearly won the game for Toronto in the final seconds of the third period, but he was unable to convert on a breakaway.
