Last Meeting ( Feb 26, 2019 ) Montreal 8, Detroit 1

Coming off one of their worst beatings of the season, a loss that dropped them outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Canadiens will try to regroup when they host the lowly Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. Montreal has won eight in a row versus the Red Wings, including all three meetings this season.

The Canadiens played seven of their last eight away from home, finishing 3-5-0 overall in that span after capping a three-game California road trip with an 8-2 drubbing by Anaheim. "The biggest thing right now is the last couple of weeks, we’ve been on the road," coach Claude Julien said. "I think it’s a kind of caught up with us." One of the three wins during the rough stretch was an 8-1 romp in Detroit, which was mauled by Florida 6-1 on Sunday for its 10th defeat in 11 games (1-7-3). "We have to instill our own confidence," coach Jeff Blashill said. "Nobody is going to get us out of this except us. We have to find a way to play better in Montreal.”

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (24-35-10): Leading scorer Dylan Larkin, out the past three games with a neck injury, was scheduled to see a doctor in New York on Monday and will join the team in Montreal if he receives clearance. Thomas Vanek, who has scored in back-to-back games, said Detroit can't afford to pack it in mentally. “There’s a lot of guys here who still have a lot to play for, not just for this year but for the rest of their career, and they better realize it quickly because there are a lot of good players coming up,” Vanek said.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (36-26-7): Carey Price has a second chance to break the franchise record of 314 wins held by Hall of Famer Jacques Plante, but he'll have to bury the memory of allowing eight goals on 29 shots to Anaheim. Forward Jonathan Drouin collected four assists in Detroit on Feb. 26 but they are his only points over the past 13 games. "I think he’s got the right approach and hopefully he starts producing soon," Julien said. "That would certainly help. But I can’t criticize his effort in the last three games because it’s been there.”

OVERTIME

1. Canadiens F Max Domi has one assist in five games since a five-point eruption in Detroit.

2. Larkin has scored 18 of his 27 goals on the road.

3. Montreal called up G Charlie Lindgren from Laval of the American Hockey League on Monday.

PREDICTION: Canadiens 4, Red Wings 2
