Terry Godwin raced 43 yards with an onside kick to help Georgia seal a 28-14 road win over South Carolina in SEC play on Sunday afternoon at Columbia, S.C.

The Gamecocks attempted the onside kick after Rico Dowdle ran 1 yard for a touchdown with 1:40 left in the game to trim Georgia's lead to 21-14. Godwin snared the onside kick and went untouched for the score.

South Carolina weathered a strong Georgia running game that generated 326 yards. Sony Michel ran for 133 yards while Nick Chubb added 121 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Brian Herrien added 82 for the Bulldogs.

Georgia (4-2, 2-2) announced its intent to run the ball on the game's opening possession. Sixty-four of 73 yards came on the ground as Georgia took a 7-0 lead with 11:55 left in the first quarter. Chubb ran 15 yards for the touchdown.

South Carolina (2-4, 1-4) turned the ball over three times in the opening half on an interception and two fumbles, but Georgia posted points only following Malkom Parrish's pick off a Perry Orth pass. Chubb capped that 28-yard drive with a 1-yard run, and the Bulldogs led 14-0 with 10:27 to go in the second period.

The Gamecocks swung momentum in the third by stopping a Georgia drive with Antoine Wilder's interception at the South Carolina 10. Sparked by Orth's 37-yard pass to Debo Samuel, South Carolina covered the 90 yards in 12 plays to cut the Georgia lead in half. Samuel scored on a 9-yard touchdown run at 3:49 of the third quarter.

Georgia, which benefited from the better field position all afternoon, used it again early in the fourth quarter. Eason, Georgia's true freshman quarterback, struggled all day but connected with Isaiah McKenzie for a key 6-yard touchdown pass and a 21-7 lead.

Orth completed 26 of 36 passes for 288 yards.

Georgia's defense, which had six sacks all season, recorded five against the Gamecocks to help achieve the program's first win in Columbia since 2008.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday before being pushed back a day due to Hurricane Matthew.
