Penn State 43, No. 16 Michigan 40 (4 OT): Bill Belton scored on 2-yard run on the fourth possession of overtime to lift the host Nittany Lions over the previously unbeaten Wolverines in the Big Ten showdown.

Christian Hackenberg passed for 305 yards and three first-half touchdowns for Penn State (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten). Belton led the Nittany Lions with 85 rushing yards, while Zach Zwinak - the team’s leading rusher coming in - was held to 24.

Devin Gardner bounced back from three early turnovers to throw for 240 yards and three touchdowns for Michigan (5-1, 1-1). Gardner also rushed for a career-high 121 yards, accounting for 361 of Michigan’s 389 total yards.

Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons was short on a 52-yard field goal at the end of regulation, had a 40-yarder blocked that would have won the game in the first overtime and missed a 33-yarder that would have won the game in the third. Penn State faced a fourth-and-one on its game-winning possession before Belton ran 3 yards to the 13 and three plays later, the Wolverines were called for defensive pass interference, putting the ball at the 2.

The Nittany Lions tied the score with 27 seconds left in regulation after beginning the drive on their 20 with 50 seconds remaining and no timeouts. Hackenberg completed a 29-yard sideline pass to Brandon Felder and a 36-yard bomb to Allen Robinson that put the ball at the 1, where Hackenberg snuck into the end zone for the first rushing touchdown against the Wolverines this season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan LT Taylor Lewan, the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year last season, left in the first half with a left leg injury and did not return. … Gardner did not score a rushing touchdown after producing at least one in the last nine regular-season games. … Gibbons made all four of his PATs to extend his streak to 127 and break the school record set by J.D. Carlson from 1988-91.
