Missourians wasted no time using online sports betting apps on Monday.

Key Takeaways

  • The geolocation company GeoComply tracked millions of checks and hundreds of thousands of active accounts on Day 1.

  • Eight online sportsbooks and several retail shops opened for business.

  • Two major Missouri cities expectedly saw a bulk of the geolocations.

Just 24 hours into one of the most anticipated U.S. sports betting launches in a couple of years, GeoComply charted 2.6 million geolocation checks across the state. More than 250,000 accounts were active on the first day.

The geotracking and compliance company, also a licensed supplier in Missouri, said that nearly 188,000 accounts were pre-registered between Nov. 17 and Nov. 30.

“Missouri has shown for years that it’s one of the most eager states in the country for legal sports betting,” said Kip Levin, GeoComply CEO. “What we’ve seen in the first 24 hours is remarkable. Tens of thousands of Missourians immediately joined safe, regulated platforms the moment they became legal. It’s a powerful reminder of how quickly consumers embrace a well-regulated market when the option finally exists.”

Big first day

Missouri online sports betting operators FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365, theScore Bet, Fanatics Sportsbook, and Circa Sports all launched at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, making Missouri the 39th U.S. state to operate legal sportsbooks.

Retail sports betting also opened on Monday at several in-state casinos.

The first 24 hours of legal sports betting in Missouri included the Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, wrapping up Week 13 in the NFL, which is king in U.S. wagering. The St. Louis Blues of the NHL saw some of the first action from Show-Me State bettors.

Light up the map

Based on maps and geolocation checks provided by GeoComply, much of the tracking expectedly occurred in the populous cities of St. Louis and Kansas City, yet there were hits in every region of the state. There were also non-compliant geolocation checks close to the borders with Illinois and Kansas, two other legal sports betting jurisdictions.

GeoComply plans to release more analysis on Missouri’s foray into sports betting after the first week, which will include data from the Kansas City Chiefs’ first game since the launch in Sunday primetime.

The company provides geofencing and compliance to a majority of Missouri’s sports betting operators, and their data does not represent the entire market.
