Canadian bettors are heavily backing their national team in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday.

Canadian sportsbook BET99 reports an overwhelming majority support for Les Rouges, who are expected to qualify for the knockout portion of the bracket from Group B.

Key Takeaways

  • Canada has an implied 85.5% probability of reaching the knockout phase for the first time in its history.

To celebrate Canada – one of three North American host nations of the tournament – beginning its hopeful run to the final, BET99 has boosted its moneyline odds from -120 to +200. That means that if Canada wins, moneyline bettors will win just over 2.5 times the usual amount.

“While we expect overwhelming support on Canada throughout the tournament, we really want our players, new and returning, to have a compelling reason to engage with the tournament from Day 1,” sportsbook manager Cliff Adelman said.

Ninety percent of Canada vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina moneyline bets for Friday’s match are in support of the Canadians, according to insights shared with Covers. Five percent are assigned to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the remaining 5% are in favour of a draw.

Bettors also believe that there will be plenty of goals scored. More than 80% of bets are on over 2.5 for total goals scored (+120), and 90% of tickets are for Canada to beat its 1.5-goal team total (+100).

Where is the money going?

Bettors are feeling the excitement and anticipation of the global tournament. The pre-match betting volume resembles that of a high-profile English Premier League or Champions League match, according to BET99.

Despite that, BET99 expects the activity to increase on match days, including when matches are in progress through live betting. The sportsbook noted that more than 80% of its historical soccer betting handle has derived from in-play markets.

Canada World Cup past and future

Canada has only participated in two World Cups (1986 and 2022) and has never registered a point, losing six of six matches by an aggregate score of 12-2.

American manager Jesse Marsch has breathed hope into players and fans. The team currently sits 30th in FIFA’s world rankings, and its -700 Canada odds to qualify for the knockout translate to an 87.5% chance. Two-thirds of the 48 teams in attendance will progress into the bracket.

The Canadians’ route through the Group Stage will also see them come up against Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 World Cup, in Vancouver on Thursday, June 18, and Switzerland in the same arena on Wednesday, June 24.
