Not only was it likely the S American teams would be successful... but history suggests it is likely that one of them will win the tourney. If we include Mexico City, the WC has been played in Latin America 6 times... Brazil won twice, Argentina won twice, Uruguay won twice.
In other words, no non-Latin American team has ever won a WC in South America or Latin America.
Interestingly, the same trend holds in Europe, where all 9 WCs played in Europe were won by a European team.
So that is 15 out of 15 "home continent" teams hoisting the trophy, between the two dominant futbol continents. Will that streak end this year?

On another note... I talk to people from Brazil on a daily basis, and I have been told by a couple people that Columbia is the team (outside of Brazil) that has the most fans and the most support. At some of their games the crowd has been almost as raucous as they would be supporting Brazil themselves.
Given the embarrassment of the Suarez debacle, I have to assume their following will be a bit subdued. I expect that fan support to get Columbia through, especially since Uruguay doesn't seem to have scoring potential without Suarez. Cavani is not a true striker... more of a setup man. Columbia's weakness may be on defense, but can Uruguay take advantage? I'm thinking no... and Uruguay isn't that strong on defense to begin with.

I predicted to my better half before Colombia made the World Cup that Yepes would fark everything up in the knockout stage. She soon became a believer and realised how he was detrimental to the team.
I saw every single Colombian elimination final of South America. And they
played better in every match without him. How can you explain why the
big Italian teams let him go?
Yepes cannot run. He tries, but he
can't match it with middle rated forwards. He can lunge the foot or
header near and there but I guarantee he is not up to this. Yepes argues with referees, not just now and then but constantly. It's a negative protesting attitude he brings.
His
attitude changes the framework of Colombia. Look at how free-flowing
they played against Japan... yet so stifled they were against Ivory
Coast because he wanted a particular defensive style.
Sorry but
Yepes for me is a disservice. I hope I am wrong. I have seen him enough
and I'm pretty sure when all is set and done he will fook it up.

I agree with everything you wrote except how you spelled Colombia. Uruguay will be on the back foot all day and that's what they are good at.

Hulk is utter garbage. His foot skills has been off this world cup. Fred is MIA. Marcelo has been clumsy. Kaka is about 3 times better than Hulk and 10 times better than Fred. Fred has clearly been paid off to not turn up at this World Cup. It astounds me why they play him. .
They must be burning to substitute Fred and Hulk.
Crowd
is relatively subdued as well. I miss the rumba, drums and girls of
previous Brazil crowds. This is almost like a rent a NFL crowd.

Colombia resorted to their defensive mode in the last 20 minutes (like
they did against Ivory Coast). You can't blame them really although I
personally despise when teams do that especially when they are playing
their natural game so well.
But, Colombia played very clean today unlike their opponents who, as always, resorted to dirty tactics. I'm glad Colombia kept their heads and played their game and didn't get sucked into that ugly football we have become accustomed to when Uruguay plays.

Colombia is a lot better than Chile folks and Chile very nearly won.
I
agree that Brazil can play better, but I don't think they are playing
well as a team. Colombia has enormous positive spirit in the group and
have absolutely no pressure against Brazil except continue to excite and
show their talent. The problem for Colombia is they haven't faced a
Neymar type; a guy with speed that runs at their defence. But Colombia
have already created history by reaching the quarter finals. Here on in,
it's an adventure. Brazil will continue to feel the heat until they win
the thing.
Colombia I believe with head and heart will cause an upset.

Colombia forward James Rodriguez is in the class of Diego Maradona,
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, according to Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez.
It's hard to disagree based on his performance so far this tournament.
Phil Neville former england defender- "James Rodriguez was sensational. What I like about him is that he's
always on the move and looking for space. The goal is world class - the
best of the tournament. The look over the shoulder tells him he has time
to turn. That awareness sets the best players apart. He looks like the
complete player."
1-1 yesterday. Big 4 unit win on Colombia.
Sunday 29 June 2014
Fairly square plays from me today, but I just do not see anyway around it.
Netherlands ML +114 The Dutch have got more match winners than Mexico and more experience in big games. Climate and Mexico's tenacity are my only concerns.
Score prediction Netherlands 2- 0
Costa Rica ML +178 Costa Rica to win against the defensive playing squad in Greece. Watch dangerous forward Joel Campbell go to work.

The temperature is clearly getting the better of the Dutch. The Mexicans are closing down the Dutch and making great chances of their own. The longer the game stays at 0-0 the better the mexicans look. However the loss of a Mexican key defender at the end of the first half can only be a good thing for the Dutch. A goal will open this game up huge. I hope its the Dutch.

2 goals in 5 minutes!!! I don't believe what I just saw. It's not going to be pretty in Mexico today. Mexico did not deserve to lose that game. Robben is constantly looking for the penalty. He falls over as much as 1 year old. I'll take the win, despite it not being just.

1-1 yesterday. That late equalizer from Greece ruined my day.
Monday 30 June 2014
Nigeria +1 & +1.5 +101 I reckon if there is going to be an upset today it will be from the Nigerians. This is easily the biggest test for France so far. Nigeria are direct and play to their strengths. I hope they will find more consistency today.
Correct Score Germany 2, Algeria 0 +585 No write up.

Learner........I'm riding your Colombia wave, but FRANCE ???...lol
I'm not so sure I buy into your comment " Colombia are a lot better then Chile ", but I think they have the right counter attack offence that will cause Brazil many problems.
