This is why Las Vegas has fancy casinos. Hard to beat the juice. Going into last week only 3 of 17 in contest are above even. Last year only the winner of pool was above even at years end.

Although I am one of two contestants still with opportunity for huge $900 first place prize for this year I do not like the prize breakdown we used this year. I would like to have at least three different prize breakdown models for all to have opportunity to vote on for next year. In my humble opinion money should be more widely spread with more payouts and possibly even a small payout like $25 or $50 for most wins and/or highest percentage.. This is a fun pickum league and we are not professional handicappers - there are other contests on Covers that are designed for all professional handicappers who spend hours and hours compiling and studying data. This year was good example of why a different model should be considered. About 2/3 of the way into the season at least half the field of 17 were so far in the hole they had no opportunity to catch top 4 for payoff and literally had no reason to continue playing. If we paid at least something down through 5th and possibly as low as 7th (with 17 or more playing) it would keep many more with some type of opportunity and if you had a small prize also for most wins then practically everyone down to the last place finisher would have something to play for and keep interest for all for entire season.

I would like to suggest a couple of minor changes to the payout formula for next season. I think it would add to the action and interest if we included a $50 payout to the person with the highest winning percentage over the course of the season while picking at least 140 games and also $50 to the person who picks the most winners over the course of the season. A person finishing in the first 3 slots as well as everyone else would be eligible for these two consolation payouts. These would generate more action and also more drama down the stretch. Next year if we had 12 players - I would suggest the winner get paid $600 (vice $700), 2nd would get $300, 3rd would get $200, and then the top winning percentage would get $50 and the person with the most overall winners would get $50. Discussion, input, and opinions invited.

Hey David, please check my 10/8/16 details. I got screwed out of $600 and should be in first in our pool. I bet $300 on Old Dominion and $300 on Georgia on before I left town on Wednesday on vacation. The Old Dominion game ended up being played a day earlier than originally sked and the Georgia game a day later than originally sked. Both games were played at the same game sites as originally scheduled. I feel all those who bet games that were voided without notice should have bets adjusted to reflect wins or losses as the games played out. This seems very unfair as it stands. Please advise. Jerry

I see 13 on leaderboard. Are there 12 or 13 in pool?

If only 11 have paid as required, I would recommend setting a deadline of sometime next week for payment from remaining 3. At that point anyone who hasn't paid entrance fee as required should be dropped.

Hi All, What a great season, incredibly we had something like 14 or 15 of the 17 entrants picking 50% or better against the spread - not too shabby. Congratulations to the Top Dogs. Especially first year entrant Joe Ricciardelli (Coach Rick) who is on the verge of winning the pick-um pool on the first try. Mike Davis and Chris Hull had the lead for a few weeks each, but faded a little down the stretch. Yours truly and a couple others just never got on track this year and lacked that one huge week to get us into serious contention. Not sure of the playoff plan, but I will be paying for myself and Sam McMurtry (raysamuelsshow). Since I know Joe well and he appears to have $800 all but locked, I thought I will call him and arrange to meet for payoff. Looking forward to next year. Can't have more fun than this at $7.00 a week.

Roger that. Congrats to David, Johnny, and Travis for their finish and to Paul for having highest percentage.

Sam e-mailed and said he is mailing me his money. Assume that Chris will be paying Travis. I don't know how to contact Johnny. David do you want me to mail you $200 to cover Sam and I?

I'm game for the bowl games. In fact I'd propose that next year the contest would end with the National Championship game.

Mack Brown and his staff should be fired immediately, although for practical reasons they will wait until the end of year. With as much high school talent as Texas has on its roster - the coaching is horrible. How does the team loaded with highly touted 4 and 5 star athletes from TX go up as a big favorite and lose handily to a small religious school - BYU. Then the next week as a home favorite, lose by 20 points to Mississippi, a team that they beat on the road last year by over 30 points - especially when both teams had essentially the same players coming back. Poor, poor coaching and/or motivation. He is old, past his prime, and must go or the program will take years to recover. |

George, when you are only picking at 16.7 %, like I am through Saturday 8/31 you need to stay out of the water until you can figure these things out! Great recovery on Saturday David - hats off to you. You started off so bad, I thought you were going to get killed on the first week with all the unpredictability. You must have really studied them because you went way down in the weeds on some of these games between obscure teams. Great job.

And how is that working out for you so far I'm in 3rd place already, without any of my games having been played yet. Something to be said about playing fewer games when you are fighting the "juice". |

Just looked at the Archives from last year. What a turnaround Sneeky.......errr - I mean Mr. Sneeky Bastard has made. Last season playing about the same number of games he finished dead last in the tourney picking only 47% winners. This year is well over 50% - must have taken handicapping lessons. Percentage wise Travis continues to be the top picker, just didn't play enough games or bet enough to hold off the fast closers the final week, but still a great year. George consistently bets few games and lets the juice eat up the gamblers. Different strategies. I've been the big gambler both years betting way more games than everyone else - and that strategy isn't working. Was in contention last year for the money until the last week - never a contender this year after taking a 6 win 26 loss beating in week 2 or 3 and have been trying to climb back to 50% since. Chris was in it all the way last year while betting the fewest games of all - he might return to the strategy next year as he is fighing me for last place this year betting more and getting eaten up by the juice. Win or lose this is fun!!

Great job to Mike and George for going out and getting you some and having a great final week. Paul also had a great closing flourish and made up alot of ground over the last 3 weeks. The Army and Navy will be pivotal as it will decide not only first and second place. But also the booby prize for last place between Chris and I. Chris had a better closing week and moved out of last place but there is still less than $500 difference. Glad our picks this year are hidden!!

Wow, almost plus $5,000 for the week. I think that has been biggest week so far in Tourny. Great picking David.

Yeah, I have $40 bet with him the same way. GA better be much improved defensively from their past 3 weeks if they hope to keep this close. The favorite has covered in this game 9 of the past 10 meetings and with the game in FL and FL on a roll with GA struggling, I don't see why it won't go to 10 out of last 11. |

Wow! What a week and some major changes on the leaderboard Sneaky Bastard has charged to the lead with an 18-5 mark and +3880 today. Sam has moved into the money in third place with a very nice 16-9 mark (4 night games to go yet) earning him +3290. Lambo had the best day of all with a superb 13-3 record earning him +4850. GatorTrav had a good day but didn't bet enough to off set the chargers. Gatordude had another respectable day earning over +1000, giving him 6 straight winning days. Outstanding job by all. More big days like this might force the "tight" players to start gambling on either more games or for higher stakes.

Lesson for all - hard to bet all the games and make a profit! Thought it would be fun to try this year but so far can't catch that magic big week. Have done well on the Major Conference games but am getting killed on the late games from west coast and games from the smaller conferences (i.e. sun belt, wac, mac, mountain west). Twice this year have started my Saturdays hitting 8 or 9 of first 10 games, only to end up below 50% once the late games were played. I'm so far down now that the experiment will continue, hoping for that one week of 65-70% on all games at $500 each to start a come back. This is cheap entertainment - fun to pretend to be a high roller at $7.00 a week cost. Big lesson learned is next year to avoid the west coast and small conference games and concentrate on playing the teams and conferences with whom you are famiar.

Tricky George, Your best bet on forum is FL over LSU, but you ended up betting (and losing ) $200 on LSU?? Most took your advice (NOT) and won on FL. Be cautious in betting against Gators this year as they appear to be much, much impoved over last year.
