Thank you Obama for this statement, I have had friends and relatives talk about this and they are not usually involved in politics. This was not a gaffe, this is Obama's true idealogy.
In what may be THE turning point in the
2012 Presidential campaign, last Saturday President Obama spoke at a
campaign rally in Roanoke, Virginia.
If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think…Well, it must be ‘cause I was just so smart! There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something, there are a whole bunch of hard working people out there. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that!”

This TV ad is being called the best TV ad being run so far.
The Romney campaign has picked up new momentum by identifying an
ideological difference with the Obama campaign that resonates with
voters. The campaign could cut similar ads every few days in a new swing
state and they would probably not lose their effectiveness. No longer
arguing that Obama does not understand the free economy, the Romney
campaign can now argue that Obama does not like the free
economy. That is a more devastating, and more effective, argument. It is
also an argument that clearly produces better ads.

Try building the same business in Soweto. See if you can use your education in 3rd world countries that don't have the same infrastructure, skilled workers etc. I'd say that the working men and women made the U.S. what it is today.

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

Somebody did invest in roads and bridges -- that would be the taxpayers. You know, those guys who are also business owners?
Stupid statement by Obama. I think he probably did mean that if you have a business, you didn't build the roads and bridges (which isn't true but is at least you could try to argue it). The way he said it though sure does make it sound like he said the business owners didn't build their businesses. Bad statement.

I think Obama is speaking from his heart. He is uber wealthy, and didn't do much of anything other then politically capture that wealth. So he speaks for others that get fat off the backs of others, utilizing the government as a capture tool, and certainly not putting into the system anywhere near equal to what they are taking out. Imagine that, somewhere else where he and rmoney are one and the same

If you have ever or currently owned your own business you would think differently. I know this statement offended me since I know that sacrifices I have made.
Obama was not talking about roads, he was talking about the government. He believes that if you have achieved success that the government deserves all of the credit. Obama demonizes personal achievement, and puts down small business owners.
We need a president that inspires people to want to own a business, not to talk down on individual success. Obama does not believe in the American Dream. This statement will haunt him......

THE turning point in the
2012 Presidential campaign
REALLY???
BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA
The turning point of the 2012 campaign was when the Repubs had their heads so far up their asses that they let the scamming con man Romney buy a ticket to the big dance while totally ignoring Ron Paul, their only REAL chance of whipping Obama in November. Amazing how the Repubs will idolize these air-heads like Sarah Palin and ignore a straight talker like Ron Paul. Mind boggling.

Small business owners should wake up to the fact that Politicians like Romney DO NOT give a rat's ass about their success. Their corporate cronies are ALL that matters.
YOU ARE NOT A PLAYER IN THE GAME.
YOU ARE NOT IN THE COUNTRY CLUB.
How many small business owners have to go belly up under the thumb of Wal-Mart Super Centers before guys like you finally wise up???

FWC, you correctly pointed out this is not a gaffe... This is our president's true belief about the role of government in our society.
People should take note... His goal is to transform our government to a more power central government that has greater authority over many areas of our lives.. Take health care reform as the first step.. What areas will he venture into in his second term.
Do we as a society truly want that, or him for a second term ........

It would be nice to think we have built this country on hard work smart investment in our future and the individual successes of driven leaders.
Not the case.
Our country is defined by wreckless spending, outright corruption (between govt and corp), bought elections and politicians, and subjugation of emerging markets.
Obama's idea that people have not earned or do not deserve success is stupid, but it is about on par with how every politician feels. That if not for them we would devolve into monkeys flinging our own shit at each other in a fortnight.

There is a Home Depot in my town. Was put in maybe 10 yrs ago. We hade maybe 3 or 4 small hardware stores before that. I know one went under (they actually sucked and it wasnt their main line of business) but the other 3 have thrived.
Its the consumer my man. The consumer choses where to spend their hard earned money. The part that is left at taxes that is :)

If you haven't gotten one of the many emails making it's way around the country, I'm sure you will.
The very simple truth... If Americans refused to buy Chinese garbage, then there would be more American manufacturing jobs. It really is as simple as that.

Walmart started out as a small business, why didn't they go belly- up under the thumb of big corporations like JC Penny, Sears or Woolworth?

I think we can agree the business climate in America has changed a bit in the last 60 years.
True. America is less free than it has been before but that does not mean another small business will not become the next Walmart. Obama's comment were not taken out of context. His point was that business needs to give back. Well... business' do give back. They give back in taxes (except GE), in employment, in charity, and in products and services that people want. If Obama takes more from them, there will be less of the other.

I guess business owners think the roads and infrastructure that was built before they started their businesses or paid for it, magically just appeared. The right wing dings just love to take something and twist it all around. They are champions at that.
