There is no such thing as an expert. It's called luck. Over the course of a season, somebody may 'luck' out. Over the course of a lifetime, everybody reverts to the mean and is out money.
The only winner is the house. Next time you visit a book, take a seat in the lounge chair and admire your surroundings. Be proud because you helped build it.
I laugh when I hear folks use the term research. 'I did my research on this game...' Research now qualifies as clicking a few websites Sunday morning and coming to a conclusion? Doctors, academics research. It takes years to research, decades even. So called sports experts tell you they've researched a game and they've come to a conclusion. You think, 'great'. Meanwhile, click another thread or website and another expert will come to an entirely different conclusion on the very same game.
Who do you believe and how do educated people see identical data and come to different conclusions? It's called opinion and opinions are just that; somebody's view of a subject not based on fact or knowledge. Opinions are like a**holes; we all have one.
Look at the pre game shows on TV. Ex players, coaches, Hall of Famers. Guys who have been in the game their whole life. Guys who sat in war rooms, dressing rooms, know the players, know the in and outs of the game. Personally know current players and coaches... They can talk about the game and be believed because they've been there. They are experts and it's more knowledge and fact based than some beat writer or website. And guess what? They're the worst at picking games!
How ironic is that... Former pros who in theory should know more than all of us, and are full time paid employees to discuss matters of the game in detail are absolutely dreadful at picking winners. So to think a bunch of public scrubs who click a few websites, never played the game are going to somehow be better at capping is utterly preposterous.
For ALL OF US, wagering is a hobby, a vice. Take what money you can afford each week and lay it down. In the long run, you will be down money. That is the only known here; you will be down money. Anybody who says they are up are flat out lying. And as long as you know that, you're experiance wagering will be a better one.
I have no problem with people buying picks. It's a nice write up and getting a good feeling about laying your money down. You get sold on the angle because it makes sense to you. If you win, you look smart. If you lose, blame is assigned (ref, player, fluke play) and you don't kick yourself in the behind because you didn't make the pick, somebody else did.
Nobody's an expert.

the one thing I learned over 15+ years of betting/gambling....you only hear about the wins.....the losses get swept under the rug into oblivion
99.9% of gamblers are down lifetime, the rare people who know when to quit while they are ahead may have success, and even then they may still give it all back a few years down the road
another thing about sports gambling is that it is all ratios.....
so I recommend starting out smaller and seeing if you can have success betting 10-20$ per bet, if you dont succeed you are out less money than if you started big right off the hop....
and at the end of the day you should only be betting with what you can afford to lose, and you need to realize that the bets are all in ratio to your wager amount.....yes you are winning a bigger number, but you are also risking a bigger number.....very simple numbers game that people dont understand
and also realize the book doesnt care about what side you are on, they just want 50/50 money on the game.....they shift the lines to try to get the money to the side they need for a 50/50 split and they just pocket the juice

Your theory of pregame TV shows is very wrong...those guys are ex players and coaches...not former handicappers.
However, you are right on one thing, everyone has their own opinion.
BOL with your picks this season

To "research" is to take existing, available information, to draw an understanding, a conclusion. Time is not a factor, and believe me it doesn't "years" to research a football game. I use websites, magazines and my own experience to make my own decisions, draw my conclusions. I take time in reviewing, perusing the available sources that are out there. I'll use a piece here, a piece there, but ultimately I draw my own conclusions. Can anyone do it? Sure. But some bettors don't seem able to decipher the information as well as others. Nor are they disciplined with their money. I'm no expert, it's a hobby for me, but it's been a profitable one. Took years to understand what was required, and I lost money then, " paid my dues", but it can be done, I'm living proof, and I'm nobody special. My write-ups on here on Covers, particularly the NFL, must mean something, believe me it doesn't come to me in a dream. So call it what you want but investing my time pays dividends. GL to you in your endeavors!

Amen brother! I’m 61…been a degenerate for 41 years. Hit the first bet I ever made, a 3 team college football parlay, back in the day when parlay cards were gathered by runners for bookies…and ties loose ??. It was my heroine. I can attest that every damn word of your dissertation is absolutely true

hate to dig up old threads but if anyone is looking for a reason to never buy picks this is it. There is a reason LC came on here to recap NBA only and decided to leave the NFL out of it. Its the tout playbook and you see it all the time. Recap winners, run from losers and hope no one notices. Only the ones who paid for picks can speak on how his NFL did last year but I can tell you how he's doing THIS YEAR. Currently -36.3u and thats not including juice. Going 1-9 this past weekend.
moral of the story, cap your own shit and live with the results. there is no one taking you to the promised land
