It is a very effective strategy in the regular season when there are so many more chances for the ‘public’ to go wrong.
It should be just another tool in your bag to use or consider.
Merril does a ‘Fade the Public’ segment each week. It is not just a blindly go the opposite strategy because sometimes the public and the pros will actually agree.
He went right at 60% this year on that segment alone.
I always glance at the numbers on each game every week just to see if I agree or not. 
Irrelevant, it is not about about Merrils services only his fade the public which has won at least 2 or 3 straight years including 60% this year.
The public loses more then not.
I understand the games are decided in the field but that again has nothing to do with the public losing.
The public does not decide the game they just can't pick the winner more often then not.
Simple minded
people who are not "intellectually agile" find ways to measure public opinion as a base to form their own views. there is a comfort in numbers, in being right because your on the popular side. this is glaring in other areas where people insist a position is correct because the public supports it.
the other side are individualists, contrarians, go-against the grainers who want to know the public side because fading the herd is the first step to deciding a winner. these people think themselves to death, arguing a situation where the public is on a dog makes the favorite the dog.
then there are sharps, who paid the QB to throw 3 interceptions in the first half.
