Mike Wagner #23 was the free safety on the great 70s Steeler dynasty team (a 4 time Superbowl champion).
Wagner was an 11th round draft pick from Western Illinois in 1971 who ended up in the starting lineup in his rookie year.
Mike Wagner was one of my favorite players because he came up big in big games. He was great in coverage, a hard hitting tackler, and a ballhawk.
Wagner played for ten years and had 36 interceptions in 119 games including 5 picks in the postseason.
I loved watching him play as he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Wagner was one of those rare players who could beat you with his brain too!
I consider that 1970s' Steelers' team to be the greatest of all time and it had such great talent that an unheralded player like Mike Wagner could go unnoticed.
