I know they ruled him out, but would it really have been impossible to play ?

They could probably tape it and toradol but likely couldn't scramble effectively which is his biggest weapon.   Then you risk more serious longterm injury to your franchise QB.  As an Oregon fan feel bad for Nixs he's a great kid.
