What makes Malzahn so awesome?
*he adapts his O to the strengths of his QB....
at Tulsa they were one of nation's top passing O's
*it is a sequential O....one play sets up another
*he runs about 5-6 basic runs / 35 or so pass plays out of
a ton of different formations each with motion / misdirection +++
*so yeah it
appears simple
*he has no 'philosophy' like we see SO often in most every
college and NFL game ....where they just KEEP doing the
same thing over and over..................
*his O....with origins in the Delaware Wing T.....combines elements of all top schemes......spread 'em out / hurry up like so many......Leach / Holgerson +++)......use TE / H back / FB.... like Urban Meyer for power /better blocking / veer schemes ......play a numbers game with zone read based schemes like Chip Kelly......run motion / misdirection (jet sweeps / bubble screens) like Oregon St / Boise +++...................AND a passing game that also creates mismatches like the pro-style O's......Bama / Tree again
THINK YOU CAN SIMULATE THIS GIVEN ONE WEEK OF PRACTICE? .....................
errrr...........NO
*stop what you think he will do......he'll do something else
why others aren't this innovative and flexible ?......I've wondered this for years
GREAT post. For those of us who have recognized Malzahn for the brilliant coach he is since the Arkansas days, his college success has been sweet vindication.
Running this 'simple' offense at all levels, Malzahn has managed to:
Have ZERO losing seasons in over 25 years as HC at all levels;
Compete for 5 HS state championships at 3 different schools in 14 years as HC, winnning 3;
Go 10-3 as OC at Ark and win 10 and 11 games in two seasons as Tulsa OC, leading the nation in scoring O and total O in different years;
10-3 in 1 season and Sunbelt champions at Arky St (with 2 of those losses on the road at Oregon and at Nebraska),
1 BCS title at Auburn as OC (all players, fans, media, everyone credited Malzahn as the coach most responsible, not Chizik) and 1 BCS title game in 1 year as HC.
Yet now after 25 years opposing coaches are going to experience some sort of Devine revelation and 'figure out' his offensive scheme and shut Auburn down this year. Hysterical. Guys it's not the scheme - it's Gus' mind, of which the scheme and how it is used is a by-product. This is why he wins everywhere he goes without exception for nearly 3 decades.
Nick Marshall is comfortable with the offense; Gus opens the playbook in 2014; the defense is upgraded and improved; the offense returns TONS of weapons for Marshall to utilize when he isn't running the ball himself; and Auburn is again a nightmare to defend and wins the SEC, again, going to the playoff where anything can happen. You heard it here first ....
