I'm posting a little earlier than usual because I'll be leaving in the morning to pick up my niece, who attends Penn State, at the Atlanta airport. From there we'll head to Tuscaloosa and meet up with my nephew, who attends the University of Alabama, to join the ESPN Game Day crew for the Penn State/Bama game. If I have time I may even put together a "Jimmydafreak" sign. Look for it!!! Should be an epic weekend.
Last week I was a very uninspiring 6-6-1 on posted picks. I usually do not keep track of my record throughout the season (too much work), but I'll try to keep up with it for a while anyhow. The Virginia Tech Chokies ended my week on a sour note when they shit the bed to a team they should have easily beaten by 2 TDs. I actually pushed that game cuz I bought the Chokies up to +3, but I posted the play at +2 so I counted it as a loss.
Here goes for week 2 . . .
Saturday Early Games
Memphis @ ECU -13
Michigan State @ FAU +28
South Florida +16 @ Florida
Saturday Mid-Day Games
Florida State +7 @ Oklahoma
Michigan +3.5 @ Notre Dame
Saturday Late Games
LSU @ Vanderbilt +10
Penn State @ Bama -11.5 ***Best Bet***
UAB @ SMU -11
Rutgers @ FIU +17.5
to all!!! Be back Monday!!!

I know this game has been blogged, texted, twittered and otherwise massaged to death, but I've been saying for about a month now that if the line on this game came in under 2 TDs that it would be a "max bet" game for me. Accordingly, I'll throw in my opinion of why it is.
Penn State has a lot of similarities to Bama. They are a tough, smash-mouth football team that is fundamentally sound, and they don't beat themselves. They are also experienced in that they will be starting 17 seniors. In short, they will make Alabama earn everything they get.
The type of teams that have given Bama's defense trouble in the past are teams with a good QB, and a prolific passing attack. Penn State is not that team, and starting QB Robert Bolden, who is 4 months removed for his high school prom, is not that QB. Teams like Penn State that want to line up and play big boy football essentially play right into the strength of this Bama team.
My question is how will Penn State score points in this game? Running the ball with Evan Royster against probably the best run defense in the nation - a defense that hasn't allowed a 100-yard rusher since Noah was building his ark? Or will Royster have success airing it out with 101,000 fanatical Bama fans screaming at the top of their lungs against a confusing Bama defense with a young, inexperienced but very athletic secondary? Or will they take advantage of turnovers and miscues of probably the most disciplined team in college football who rarely makes a mistake? If none of these scenariors seem very likely to you, then you are starting to see why I like this game so much.
On the other side of the ball, Bama fields one of the best and most experienced offenses in college football. Right now I don't really see any team in the country holding Bama under 30 points unless they really dominate the time of possession, which I think is Penn State's only chance to keep this game close. I have no doubt that they will try to shorten the game, but I don't see them being very effective at doing so.
Inside the locker room the players are talking about using this game to establish an identity for this 2010 team, and to make a huge statement in front of a national audience.
When the final seconds tick off the 4th quarter clock, I think we'll see a score of something like 31-10 in favor of Bama.
to all!!!

The game is being played in Detroit so it essentially a home game for Michigan State, and Schnellenberger is famous for pulling his starters in these non-competitive out-of-conference games. Although FAU may cover the big number, I just don't see much value here.

I do...Oh well. What's funny is I was just looking over your card trying to see if I could find something I didn't believe had any value and I couldn't find anything...Thought you put together a good card...with the exception of..
ND. I guess it has a little value catching 3.5..
But I think its going to be ND by 10.

Looking hard at FIU myself, Rutgers offense is absolutely terrible. Looks like I should get me some Bama. You know that team better than anyone. Good luck this week.

You could be right. I really liked Purdue last week and pushed. I still think Notre Dame is still a bit of a mystery. I agree that this line may not have a tremendous amount of value. I see this as a game that Michigan has a great chance of winning and the 3.5 is a small insurance policy. I can't see taking the other side. As I said, I could certainly be wrong.

One word on the Rutgers/FIU game . . . humidity. Teams from the north usually struggle with the Florida humidity this time of year.

I thought Notre Dame did just enough to win the game. Fundamentally speaking I thought they were very good. The safety and the Floyd fumble you expect that. You have to realize Floyd was walking into the endzone to put the Irish up 27-3 when he fumbled the ball. That game was all but over at that point. Tackling was much better, that is what killed them last year. I don't think that Kelly put together a full game plan for Crist yet. He kind of tried to be too perfect last week, instead of just going out there and playing. We all know Crist has talent was a 5 star QB coming out, one of the best in the country. He should be a very good player. I think this game comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes and I think ND will be more disciplined and fundamental than Michigan. We shall see though, I could be wrong, but I hope that I am not. Hope you sweep besides that one

I realize I was very fortunate to push with Purdue. That line went down to 10.5 so I think a lot of Golden Domer backers still covered. I hope you were one of them.
I don't think there is any doubt that Kelly will make a huge impact on that program, but I'm betting that Rich Rod's program is a little more established right now than Kelly's. But what the hell do I know???

Bama and Penn State, man does this matchup bring back some great memories. I have been looking forward to this game from the second I learned we had them scheduled. Joe Pa is a class guy, and I have nothing but the upmost respect for him, but I have a feeling its not going to be a visit he will enjoy whatsoever. I have company coming over for the weekend again, my house is the congregation spot for football weekends apparently, therefore I will not be making the trip to T-Town tomorrow. Have a fun and safe trip brother. I'll be checking out Gameday for the Freak.
