Interesting note for SJS and Hawaii: Both teams have incredible FT defense. Teams shoot a terrible 60% against SJS. Hawaii gives up 63%, and it was well below 60% until they played the #1 FT team in the nation in Utah State last game. I have studied film of Hawaii’s Free Throw Defense after noting that teams usually go 13-24, 15-30, or 5-11 from the stripe against Hawaii. All teams in College Basketball should study how Hawaii plays FT defense: use hand motions to disturb air currents, wink at the shooter, show some shaved leg, whisper to the shooter that Hawaii robbed the BCS of $5 Million….all of these defensive nuances make FT defense solid.....
- 6-6 San Jose State is off of 2 days rest and a loss at Boise State. SJS trailed by 13 at the half, closed to within a point with 10 minutes left and eventually lost by 15….
- 4-9 Hawaii is off a 86-80 loss to Utah State. Hawaii was within 8 the first 37 minutes and closed to within 1 point with 3 minutes left. Three straight questionable fouls gave USU 6 easy points from the stripe to bury Hawaii….Hawaii out rebounded, had twice as many 3 pointers (10), had more baskets, and shot nearly 50%....difference: 41 ft attempts for Utah State to 18 for Hawaii…..
- Hawaii has won 9 straight against SJS, including 4 straight at SJS the last 4 years.
My Pick and Reasons Why:
Hawaii ML
- SJS Home Crowd? Ask their fans or anyone who has seen a SJS Home game. They don’t have any attendance, maybe 1k – 2k . It is a high school atmosphere. Why is Hawaii 4-0 at SJS? Because often there are more Hawaii fans at SJS games than SJS fans. Many Hawaiians in California go to the SJS games
- Back to reality for San Jose State. SJS was what? 5-24 last year? 5-24 every year for the last 10 years? SJS started out 2-0 and I am sure they are improved…..However, they have now gone 4-6, with 3 wins over lower division crap teams….
- Hawaii, as predicted, played balls out against Utah State. I could see the difference in Hawaii when they were getting killed early versus Centenary. They more or less said , “ Forget it, we are losing anyway, lets leave it all out here”. I don’t expect Hawaii to win more than 1 or 2 on the road, this should be one here.
- Hawaii is equal or better than SJS in almost every major statistical category (except FT defense). Hawaii sucks , but they are probably equal or better at almost every position than SJS. Sure SJS is 6-6 but what would their record be if they played New Mexico twice, St. John’s, Georgia, LBSU, San Diego twice, Illinois and Utah State? If SJS played Hawaii’s schedule, they would be 2-10 at best.
- Hawaii has 3 starting seniors who have beaten SJS every year they have been here. SJS has a bunch of Freshmen and Sophomores and transfers…..Centenary and Utah State showed me a ton…..this team has no talent, but they are busting their asses off on the boards and hustle plays….. Small Play, this is still a spooky road game for Hawaii……..the hefty moneyline is worth a shot on a team that usually owns this overrated 6-6 SJS team……..
