MLB betting continues into a new week as NL West rivals San Diego Padres travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers Monday. The California clubs will open up an important four-game set as both teams try to catch division-leading Colorado.

We break down the baseball odds and bring our best Padres vs. Dodgers picks and predictions for MLB action for Monday, August 10 (9:40 PM ET)

San Diego Padres vs Los Angeles Dodgers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Luis Perdomo RHP (0-0, 5.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) vs Dustin May RHP (1-0, 2.63 ERA, 1.17 WHIP)

Luis Perdomo will make his first start of the year (and just his second in the last two seasons) against the Dodgers. The righthander has been mostly used in relief after his first few seasons where he made 59 starts with mostly ugly results. Expect him to be on a limited pitch count in this contest.

Dustin May started against the Padres last week and picked up a win after allowing two runs and fanning eight batters over six innings. The young righty has allowed just six hits in his last 9 1-3 innings of work and is quickly establishing himself as one of the best young arms in the game.

Weather

It’s looking like another beautiful day in the city of Angels with the temps reaching the hi-70s with 44% humidity. A light wind will be blowing out to right-center field that shouldn't be a big factor. Be sure to monitor the gametime conditions with our MLB weather info.

Injuries

Padres: Eric Hosmer 1B (questionable), Trey Wingenter RP (out), Jose Castillo RP (out)
Dodgers: Corey Seager SS (questionable), Alex Wood P (out), Joe Kelly RP (out), Jimmy Nelson RP (out)

Betting Trend to Know

The Dodgers have dominated the matchup lately, as over the last 57 games they have won 40 of them. Find more MLB betting trends for Padres vs. Dodgers.

Moneyline Pick

The Dodgers and Padres meet for the fourth time over the last week. L.A. took the last series 2-1 after dropping the first game but pulled out some tough wins on the road, driven by some Joc Pederson power. Like we said about Perdomo, the Friars pitcher is mostly a reliever but has struggled when starting in the past. The 27-year-old has pitched to a 5.04 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP and a BAA of .293 in 60 career starts.

Los Angeles has only played the Giants at home this year, as Monday’s game will be the Dodgers’ seventh home contest of the season. LA is averaging 5.5 runs per game at Dodger Stadium and has covered the runline in each of its three wins this year. We like the pitching matchup for the Dodgers, but hate the juice on the moneyline, pushing us to the runline in a game that L.A. could need the late innings to pull ahead against a San Diego bullpen that has a 5.28 ERA on the year.

PREDICTION: Dodgers -1.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

The Dodgers are cranking out long balls of late, averaging 2.33 per game — and those dingers came at Petco Park and Oracle Park. Returning to Dodger Stadium, where they average the fifth-most home runs per game (1.72), should help them keep slugging against a Padres pitching staff that is allowing 1.80 dingers per game when on the road. The path to running up the score in today’s MLB is through home runs as teams are collectively hitting .230 on the year.

On the other side of the field, the Padres are coming off a game where they ripped six home runs in the first three innings against the Diamondbacks, so they will be coming into the series with confidence at the plate, which will be needed versus May. We think L.A. can do most of the heavy lifting for this Over but we like where the San Diego bats are coming into the game.

PREDICTION: Over 9 (+100)

Home run pick

As mentioned above, the Dodgers are doing a good job of leaving the yard at home, and of late overall, while San Diego is coming off a six-home-run game on Sunday. We are expecting at least a couple of long balls on Monday and with two pitchers who haven’t allowed many baserunners (near 1.20 WHIPs with both starters), we could make some money with the first dinger of the day.

May has averaged under one baserunner per inning over his last two outings and gave up his first home run of the year last week to the Padres’ Jake Cronenworth. Perdomo could help us win this bet in the first as he has to face Joc Pederson, Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger — who are all hard swingers.

PREDICTION: First home run of the game will be - Solo HR (-125)
