NASCAR All-Star Race field

The first thing you'll notice about the All-Star Race field is that it's significantly smaller than the typical 40-car odds board.

The All-Star Race being a somewhat-exclusive event, 17 spots are currently filled by race winners from the current and past season, as well as previous Cup Series champs and All-Star winners. The remaining three spots in the 20-car field will be decided by Friday's All-Star Open (two drivers — see below for odds), and a fan vote (one).

Whoever slides into the Open spots will be a considerable underdog, a prawn in a veritable shark tank of the Cup Series' very best. Denny Hamlin sits as the slim favorite, inches ahead of William Byron and Christopher Bell.

Hamlin, a past All-Star winner, is joined by fellow former champs Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, and Kyle Larson (a three-time winner) under 10:1 odds, although the prices for these drivers should be considered more speculative than usual.

Firstly, the All-Star Race is not a points-paying contest, although the winner will bag himself a cool million dollars. This changes strategy considerably for drivers who may be less incentivized by the cash prize and bragging rights.

And, more importantly, the 2024 All-Star Race is taking place at historic North Wilkesboro, which hasn't hosted a Cup Series race since 1996 — when most of this year's field was still in diapers — meaning no relevant track data to be had save for last year's All-Star race.

NASCAR All-Star Race expert picks and predictions

Odds listed below courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook, 5-16-2024.

North Wilkesboro pre-qualifying favorites

Denny Hamlin (+550)

Great on short tracks this season. He won Bristol, Richmond and Dover while also being 11th in Martinsville. Hamlin finished 13th in this race last year.

William Byron (+600)

The fastest car this season could shine in the All-Star race. Byron won Martinsville and was seventh in Richmond. While he was only 20th here last year, watch out.

Joey Logano (+900)

Logano was 10th in this race last year, and second and sixth, respectively, at Richmond and Martinsville.

North Wilkesboro sleepers

Martin Truex Jr. (+1000)

Won last year’s Clash and second at Bristol and fourth in Richmond this year. That’s why being 14th in this race a year ago doesn’t scare me off.

Chase Elliott (+1000)

Won an All-Star race in Bristol, was fifth here last year and eighth in Bristol this spring preceding a fifth and third, respectively, at Richmond and Martinsville.

Tyler Reddick (+1200)

Third here last year, 10th at Richmond and seventh in Martinsville.

North Wilkesboro fades

Kyle Larson (+850)

Last year, Larson led 145 of 200 laps and victorious in the main event for his third All-Star victory on three different tracks. On short tracks this season, Larson was fifth (Bristol), third (Richmond), second (Martinsville), and second (Dover).

So why am I fading him? Just twice has someone won back-to-back All-Star races (Davey Allison 1991-1992 and Jimmie Johnson 2012-2013) and with the distraction of also competing at Indianapolis this week, I don’t trust the number.

Ryan Blaney (+900)

Won the 2022 All-Star race at Texas and was sixth last year. On short tracks, Blaney was 16th at Bristol and 19th in Richmond this year.

North Wilkesboro prop pick: (Christopher Bell -150 vs. Tyler Reddick +115)

While Bell won Phoenix in March, he was 35th in Martinsville and 34th at Dover. Reddick (stats above) has been great on short tracks and is plus-money.

Pick: Tyler Reddick (+115 at DraftKings)

North Wilkesboro track analysis

NASCAR’s premiere series has raced at North Wilkesboro 94 times. However, last year was the first visit to the North Carolina short track in 25 years. The last race prior to that was held in 1996. Last year’s All-Star race was the first time the drivers have ran a NASCAR Cup Series car around this .625-mile track.

Then, the track repaved the place which completely alters the way they can race. Previously, Richmond was the best place to compare it to but now, with a repaved surface and different tire strategies with a softer tire that wears quicker against one that doesn’t, a strategy element unlike anywhere else we go to comes into play.

North Wilkesboro Trends

  • Two of the last four series champions ended up winning the All-Star race the year they won the title.
  • Chase Elliott won the 2020 All-Star race at Bristol and later won his first championship.
  • A year later, Kyle Larson did the same thing, this time the race was held at Texas.
  • Ryan Blaney was sixth last year but it was Larson who had the most speed in 2023 winning the All-Star race.
  • Translation? Don’t overthink it. The top drivers typically win the All-Star race.
