It’s been a rough start to the WNBA season for two teams hoping to turn it around this year. Both the Seattle Storm and Washington Mystics have opened the season 0-2 as they get set to play Sunday.
The Storm are a 6-point road favorite by the WNBA odds after being a preseason favorite to win the WNBA title, thanks in part to a key offseason addition.

Nneka Ogwumike Over 31.5 points + rebounds + assists (+100 at bet365)
My analysis
The addition of Nneka Ogwumike this past offseason was supposed to propel the Seattle Storm out of the bottom of the WNBA standings. Seattle went just 11-29 last season after reaching the playoffs in head coach Noelle Quinn’s first full season on the job in 2022.
However, the Storm are coming off back-to-back losses to the Lynx to start the season, including a 102-93 double-OT thriller. One thing's for certain, Ogwumike isn’t the problem.
The eight-time All-Star leads the team in points (22.0) and rebounds per game (10.0) and is coming off a 24-point, 11-rebound performance. She’s been a monster down low, shooting 60%, and her skill and physicality should pose a major challenge for the Washington Mystics.
While the Mystics have size with Stefanie Dolson and Shakira Austin, their defense is giving up 84.5 points per game, sixth most in the WNBA, and the team is third-last in rebounds per game (31.0).
A lot of the roster is back from last season’s squad that allowed the second-most rebounds per game in the league to opponents (35.9). Not to mention that two-time MVP Elena Delle Donne is away from basketball right now.
Ogwumike has already seen heavy usage to start the season, too. She’s playing 36.5 minutes per game and taking 15 shots with her new team, plus, she’s done a good job getting to the charity stripe (4.0 free throws per game).
Clearly, she doesn’t look like she’ll be slowing down anytime soon. She was a dominant force for more than a decade with the Los Angeles Sparks and has seamlessly fit in as the focal point of the Storm’s frontcourt.
In two games against the Mystics last season, Ogwumike averaged a combined 32 points + rebounds + assists in only 29 minutes per game.

For as impressive as Ogwumike has been with her new team, Seattle’s superstar Jewell Lloyd has struggled to bring her best with her new teammate. After leading the WNBA in points per game last season (24.7), Lloyd is putting up only 15 through two games this year.
Her shooting has been atrocious to start the season, hitting only 17.5% from the floor. Washington has a strong backcourt to compete with her, too, led by Ariel Atkins. With Delle Donne away, Atkins has taken on a bigger role.
The two-time All-Star is scoring 14 per game to start the year and has been utilizing her long-range game. She’s averaging two made threes per game on six attempts, up from 4.6 attempts last season.
