NBA Power Rankings - Week 4

By SEAN MURPHY - My goals are simple: win and make consistent profit.

A major shake-up in the top five sees the Celtics and Lakers fall considerably. A Suns-Hawks-Nuggets top three is a nice change of pace after seeing Boston and L.A. reign for the better part of two seasons. Here's a look at the complete rundown from 1-through-30.

Power Rating Team Comments
1 4 move up in rankings3 9-2
(6-5-0)
-11.80 Phoenix
We're 11 games into the season and the Suns still haven't been held under 100 points. They lost to the Lakers on Thursday, but that was a miserable scheduling spot. I'll give them a shot at number one.
2 7 move up in rankings5 8-2
(9-1-0)
-11.60 Atlanta
I don't think it's debatable; the Hawks are the best team in the East right now.
3 5 move up in rankings2 7-3
(5-5-0)
-11.20 Denver
The Nuggets unleashed about six months of frustration in the second half against the Lakers on Friday night.
4 1 move down in rankings3 8-3
(5-6-0)
-10.90 Boston
I had these guys in the top spot last week? The Celtics have lost back-to-back games SU and are just 1-5 ATS in their last six overall.
5 2 move down in rankings3 7-3
(3-7-0)
-10.70 L.A. Lakers
The Lakers are going to sleepwalk through a few games this season. Just ask anyone that bet them on Sunday against Houston.
6 10 move up in rankings4 7-3
(5-5-0)
-10.40 Cleveland
That trip to MSG really seemed to spark LBJ and the Cavs. They've won four in a row, going 3-1 ATS in the process.
7 8 move up in rankings1 8-3
(8-3-0)
-10.10 Portland
The Blazers defense has come up big on their current road trip, holding three of four opponents under 80 points.
8 6 move down in rankings2 7-3
(7-3-0)
-10.00 Dallas
I'm starting to think that the Mavs have the potential to challenge the Lakers for the West crown.
9 12 move up in rankings3 6-4
(7-3-0)
-9.60 Houston
The Rockets are 4-3 SU and 5-2 ATS as underdogs this season.
10 3 move down in rankings7 7-3
(6-4-0)
-9.10 Orlando
Orlando's inconsistency is alarming. They have a sneaky-tough stretch coming up with a home game against the Thunder followed by a trip through Boston and Toronto.
11 9 move down in rankings2 7-2
(6-3-0)
-8.70 Miami
Miami is 7-2 but has only one signature win, that coming at home against the Nuggets.
12 16 move up in rankings4 5-2
(5-2-0)
-8.20 Milwaukee
These Bucks can play. Oh, and that Brandon Jennings kid isn't too bad either.
13 11 move down in rankings2 5-4
(3-6-0)
-7.80 Chicago
It's the same old story for the Bulls; tough at home, awful on the road.
14 15 move up in rankings1 5-5
(6-4-0)
-7.50 Oklahoma City
The Thunder are loaded with potential, but they're still young. Sunday's home loss to the Clippers was a reminder of that.
15 13 move down in rankings2 4-4
(4-4-0)
-7.20 San Antonio
The Spurs were back at full strength but it wasn't enough to get them past the Thunder on Saturday. Maybe this team just isn't that good.
16 14 move down in rankings2 5-5
(6-4-0)
-7.10 Toronto
Credit the Raptors for matching their biggest comeback in franchise history on Friday and then pushing the Suns to the limit on Sunday.
17 24 move up in rankings7 5-4
(6-3-0)
-6.50 Sacramento
Who could have predicted that the Kings would be over .500 nine games into the season?
18 25 move up in rankings7 4-3
(4-3-0)
-6.30 Indiana
The Pacers take a big jump thanks to four straight wins both SU and ATS.
19 17 move down in rankings2 5-5
(6-4-0)
-5.80 Detroit
The Pistons came within a half-point of extending their ATS win streak to five games on Sunday.
20 18 move down in rankings2 4-6
(4-6-0)
-5.30 Utah
If only the Jazz could play as well as they did on Friday with Deron Williams in the lineup.
21 19 move down in rankings2 3-6
(5-4-0)
-4.70 Charlotte
It looks like Stephen Jackson is headed to Charlotte. Probably a good move for a team that was poised to set records for offensive futility.
22 20 move down in rankings2 4-6
(3-7-0)
-4.10 Philadelphia
Will Eddie Jordan and his 'Princeton offense' last the season?
23 23 no change in rankings 4-7
(4-7-0)
-3.80 L.A. Clippers
After beating the Thunder on Sunday, the Clippers have a shot at a winning streak with the Hornets and Grizzlies up next.
24 28 move up in rankings4 3-6
(4-5-0)
-3.00 Golden State
Now that Stephen Jackson is gone, the Warriors can start to move forward. Don Nelson should be the next guy out the door.
25 22 move down in rankings3 2-7
(2-7-0)
-2.60 Washington
Weren't these Wizards supposed to be better this season? Their losing streak has reached six games (SU and ATS).
26 21 move down in rankings5 3-8
(3-8-0)
-2.30 New Orleans
Hey, at least the Hornets have an excuse now that CP3 is sidelined. The free fall continues.
27 27 no change in rankings 2-8
(4-6-0)
-1.80 Memphis
The Grizzlies have signed Jamaal Tinsley to replace Allen Iverson. So, yeah, things are looking up.
28 29 move up in rankings1 1-9
(2-8-0)
-1.10 New York
What was Mike D'Antoni thinking when he decided to get involved in this mess?
29 26 move down in rankings3 1-10
(4-7-0)
-0.60 Minnesota
The T'Wolves didn't have a chance without Al Jefferson in the lineup over the weekend. They haven't won a game since opening night.
30 30 no change in rankings 0-10
(4-6-0)
-0.20 New Jersey
0-10 and counting. The Nets best opportunity for their first win looks like it will come Saturday against the Knicks.

Power Ratings compute offensive and defensive statistics into one number for each team, while accounting for factors like recent performances and strength of schedule. Power Ratings can be used as a baseline for relative spread index to compare current or future match-ups between two teams. The relative spread does not account for non-statistical factors like home-field advantage, recent injuries, game time decisions, rivalries, publicity, and weather.
