Virginia 30, Miami 13: Khalek Shepherd rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown and the Cavaliers’ defense held the visiting Hurricanes to one offensive touchdown while keeping their bowl hopes alive with a victory.

Virginia (5-6, 3-4 ACC) ended a four-game losing streak and needs a victory over in-state rival Virginia Tech next week to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2011. Shepherd scored on a 4-yard touchdown with 8:30 left, but it was the Cavaliers’ defense that set the game’s tempo early.

Quarterback Brad Kaaya was 20-of-33 for 263 yards and a touchdown but was sacked four times for the Hurricanes (6-5, 3-4). Clive Walford finished with seven receptions for 105 yards while Duke Johnson’s streak of consecutive 100-yard rushing games was halted at six (88 yards on 15 carries).

Virginia, coming off an open date, took a 23-7 lead on Darius Jennings’ 1-yard touchdown run with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter. The Cavaliers added some insurance early in the fourth on Ian Frye’s third field goal of the game, this one from 22 yards out.

Miami, which has outscored opponents 108-35 in the opening quarter this season, struck first on a 47-yard strike from Kaaya to Phillip Dorsett with 3:03 remaining. But the Cavaliers tacked on two Frye field goals and a one-handed touchdown grab by Canaan Severin to take a 13-7 halftime lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami WR Herb Waters was motionless for several minutes after a helmet-to-helmet hit but waved his right hand before being carted off the field and taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center by ambulance. … The Hurricanes' second touchdown came on a blocked punt attempt by Alec Vozenilek and was returned 13 yards Hugo Delapenha Jr. with 1:24 left in the game. … Johnson, who started the season ranked No. 15 on Miami’s career rushing list, needs 34 yards to become the school’s career rushing leader. … Johnson fumbled on his first carry which was recovered by Virginia, the 25th takeaway for the Cavaliers this season.
