Virginia Tech 17, No. 19 Duke 16: Michael Brewer threw a pair of touchdown passes and the visiting Hokies took advantage of sloppy play by the Blue Devils to pull off the upset.
Brewer completed 12-of-23 passes for 138 yards with one interception while J.C. Coleman ran for a season-high 95 yards for Virginia Tech (5-5, 2-4 ACC), which rallied from an early 10-0 hole to snap a three-game losing streak. Bucky Hodges and Isaiah Ford combined for 10 catches, 105 yards and scored a TD apiece for the Hokies.
Josh Snead ran for a touchdown and Ross Martin booted three field goals for Duke (8-2, 4-2), but he missed from 40 yards out with just over two minutes remaining. Anthony Boone was 18-for-40 for 181 yards with two interceptions as the Blue Devils were held out of the end zone for the final 53-plus minutes while tumbling out of first place in the Coastal Division.
Martin's first field goal - a 36-yarder - and Snead's 2-yard TD run gave Duke a 10-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest. The only scoring for the remainder of the first half came on Brewer's 10-yard TD strike to Ford early in the second quarter.
Martin was good from 48 yards and 24 yards to cap the Blue Devils' first two possessions of the third to make it 16-7, but a Boone interception led to a field goal for the Hokies and Duke fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, leading to Brewer's 15-yard TD pass to Hodges to put the visitors on top 17-16 with 12:47 left. Virginia Tech gave the Blue Devils a gift with a failed fake punt on fourth-and-18 with four minutes to go, but Martin was wide left and Boone was sacked on consecutive plays to thwart Duke's last chance moments later.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Martin entered a perfect 13-for-13 on the season before missing twice. ... Hodges has six TD catches, which ties Jeff King's (2005) single-season school record for a tight end. ... Virginia Tech was 2-for-15 on third downs and 0-for-2 on fourth downs.
