Florida International 34, Wagner 3: Alex Gardner rushed for a freshman school-record 139 yards and Alex McGough threw for two touchdowns as the Panthers rolled over the visiting Seahawks.

Sophomore tight end Jonnu Smith notched the first 100-yard receiving day of his career, catching nine passes for 127 and a touchdown for Florida International (1-1). McGough and E.J. Hilliard combined to complete 24-of-35 for 236 yards for the Panthers, who tied a school record by forcing six turnovers.

Wagner starting quarterback Brian Gehring was 10-of-21 for 66 yards and a pair of interceptions. Anthony Carrington caught three passes for 62 yards for the Seahawks (1-1), who finished with just nine first downs.

McGough connected with Smith for a 41-yard touchdown on the Panthers’ third play from scrimmage and they registered more points soon after on defense. Richard Leonard picked off a Gehring pass and scampered 60 yards for a score with 9:58 left in the first quarter.

Bryan Maley’s 21-yard kick got the Seahawks on the board, but Florida International answered with two field goals and McGough’s short TD pass to Cory White for a 27-3 halftime lead. Anthon Samuel put the final touches on the victory with a short touchdown run with 4:17 left in the contest.
