Bethune-Cookman 14, Florida International 12: Quentin Williams threw for 149 yards and a touchdown as the visiting Wildcats upset the Panthers in the season opener for both teams.
Frank Brown and Michael D. Jones scored touchdowns for Bethune-Cookman (1-0), which improved to 4-0 all-time against Florida International. Erik Williams had three sacks for the Wildcats, who did not turn the ball over.
Alex McGough went 13-of-27 for 117 yards and a touchdown for Florida International (0-1), which had eight different players catch at least one pass. T.J. Lowder caught a touchdown pass while Austin Taylor kicked two field goals for the Panthers, who finished with just 43 rushing yards.
Bethune-Cookman opened the scoring when Jones plunged into the end zone from a yard out before Florida International responded with a 25-yard field goal from Taylor. Taylor booted another 25-yard field goal to close the gap to 7-6 in a first half that featured just 255 yards of offense from both teams.
The Wildcats took their biggest lead of the game at 14-6 after Brown hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass from Williams early in the fourth quarter. McGough hit Lowder from five yards out to make it 14-12 with 5:16 remaining but Williams couldn't complete a pass for the two-point conversion to lose for the second straight season to the FCS team.
