Webb leads Cal to upset of No. 12 Texas

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Quarterback Davis Webb threw for 396 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, and Chad Hansen had 12 receptions for 196 yards and two scores to lead California to a wild 50-43 upset of No. 11 Texas on Saturday in the Bears' home opener and the Longhorns' first road game.
Hansen, who entered the weekend leading the nation in receptions per game and receiving yards per game, scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 12-yard reception with 3:41 left that broke a 43-43 tie. Cal running back Vic Enwere appeared to clinch the game with a 55-yard touchdown run with 1:21 left. But a review determined he let go of the ball with no one around him before crossing the goal line. But because there was no immediate recovery by Texas, Cal was given the ball at the 1-yard line.
The Bears (2-1) ran out the clock.
Running back D'Onta Foreman ran for 157 yards on 21 carries, while running back Chris Warren had 119 yards on 18 carries, as the Longhorns (2-1) rolled up 307 yards on the ground against a Cal defense that entered the weekend ranked 125th of 129 FBS teams in rushing defense.
Texas freshman quarterback Shane Buechele was 19 of 33 for 196 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Tyrone Swoopes, the other half of the Longhorns' two-quarterback system, was 4 of 6 for 65 yards and an interception, and also ran for 32 yards.
After a first half that featured 68 points, neither team scored in the third quarter, leaving Cal with a 35-33 lead.
Texas took the lead on its first offensive play of the fourth quarter, a 47-yard touchdown run by Foreman that put the Longhorns ahead 40-35.
Cal regained the advantage at 43-40 on Webb's 1-yard touchdown run followed by Hansen's two-point conversion run with 10:45 left. Texas tied it on Trent Domingue's 35-yard field goal at the 5:29 mark.
Webb completed 27 of 40 passes and also ran for a score.
Offenses ruled the first half, which ended with Domingue missing a 53-yard field goal attempt to leave Cal with a 35-33 lead at the break.
Foreman had 80 yards rushing in the first half for Texas, which outgained Cal 319-277 over the first 30 minutes. Buechele threw one touchdown pass in the first half, but also threw an interception, and Swoopes also threw a pick in the first half.
Webb completed 16 of 25 passes for 245 yards, three scores and no interceptions before intermission.
Cal scored a touchdown on its first possession, going 84 yards in six plays. The drive ended on Davis' 29-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Veasy.
Texas answered on its first possession, with Warren scoring on a 4-yard run to complete an 84-yard drive.
Texas took a 10-7 lead on Domingue's 38-yard field goal, which was set up when the Longhorns stopped Enwere for no gain on a fourth-and-inches play from the Cal 34-yard line.
The Longhorns made it 17-7 when Warren bulled his way into the end zone from 12 yards out.
Cal reduced the deficit to 17-14 on Enwere's 1-yard touchdown run. Three plays earlier, a fumble by Cal's Demetris Robertson was recovered by Texas safety Kevin Vaccaro in the end zone and returned 66 yards. However, the ruling was overturned on review when it was determined Robertson was down at the 3 before fumbling.
A 4-yard touchdown run by Foreman gave Texas a 24-14 lead early in the second quarter. But a 1-yard scoring run by Enwere made it a 24-21 game. That Cal score was set up by Chibuzo Nwokocha's interception of a tipped Swoopes pass.
A 41-yard touchdown pass from Buechele to Jacorey Warrick put Texas up 31-21, but a 29-yard scoring pass from Webb to Melquise Stovall cut the margin to 31-28.

But Cal took a 35-33 lead with 55 seconds left in the half on a 23-yard touchdown reception by Hansen that was set up by Luke Rubenzer's 45-yard interception return.
