Virginia overcame a 10-point first half deficit to nab their first victory of the season as they knocked off in-state foe William & Mary 35-29 on Saturday at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.

Quarterback Matt Johns completed 17-of- 23 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns for the Cavaliers (1-2). Running back Taquan Mizzell racked up 123 receiving yards, including an 80-yard TD reception.

Quarterback Steve Cluley threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tribe (1-1), while running back Mikal Abdul-Saboor tallied 100 yards on 22 carries.

Virginia trailed 17-7 in the second quarter before reeling off 28 of the next 35 points and held off a late William & Mary surge in the final minutes.

The Cavaliers took their largest lead 35-20 early in the third quarter when cornerback Maurice Canady returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown. It was Virginia's first punt return for a score since 2004.

Virginia outgained William & Mary 373-371 while turning it over twice. The Tribe did not commit a turnover.
