NORMAN, Okla. -- Quarterback Baker Mayfield set a school record with 572 yards of total offense - 487 passing - and accounted for six touchdowns to lead No. 16 Oklahoma to a 52-38 victory Saturday over Tulsa at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium
Mayfield passed for four touchdowns and ran for 85 yards and two scores en route to breaking Landry Jones' school record.
With the Sooners leading by a touchdown late in the third quarter, Mayfield slipped out of the grasp of two Tulsa defenders and looked as if he would scramble for a first down.
Instead, Mayfield pulled up and took a step back to find redshirt freshman wide receiver Mark Andrews for a 17-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 45-31.
The Sooners seemed poised to blow the game open in the final two minutes before half, leading 31-10 and with the ball just outside the Tulsa 20. Things turned around quickly, though, beginning with Joe Mixon's fumble a play after Sterling Shepard's 44-yard catch.
The Golden Hurricane quickly moved the ball down field, finishing off the drive on a 28-yard touchdown from Dane Evans to Keevan Lucas with just 13 seconds remaining before half.
Tulsa's ensuing kick bounced high into the air off Oklahoma's Frank Shannon before being recovered by the Golden Hurricane at the Sooners 43.
Evans found receiver Keyarris Garrett in the end zone on a Hail Mary pass one play later to turn what looked like a blowout into a seven-point game at halftime 31-24.
Garrett finished with 14 catches for 189 yards and a touchdown. Lucas had five catches for 84 yards and two score.
Shepard finished with eight catches for 144 yards.
Tulsa running back Zack Langer rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown. Before last week when Tennessee's Jalen Hurd topped the mark, Oklahoma had not allowed a 100-yard rusher since a 45-31 loss to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl following the 2013 season.
NOTES: Oklahoma RB Samaje Perine left the game late in the first half after suffering a hand injury on a fumble. Perine returned in the second half. ... Tulsa CB Darrell Williams suffered an apparent leg injury early in the game and did not return. ... Sooners LB Devante Bond blocked Redford Jones' 32-yard field goal try on the first play of the second quarter. The block was recovered at midfield by Ahmad Thomas. ... Oklahoma C Ty Darlington missed the game with a knee injury sustained a week earlier at Tennessee. Jonathan Alvarez shifted from guard to start in Darlington's spot and Derek Farniok started at Alvarez's guard spot. ... Freshman CB P.J. Mbanasor made his second start of the season in place of Jordan Thomas, who did not play for disciplinary reasons. ... Tulsa DE Derrick Alexander and Oklahoma LB Dominique Alexander are brothers. Both started Saturday's game and Derrick Alexander recovered a fumble in the second quarter. ... Oklahoma has a week off before opening Big 12 play at home against West Virginia on Oct. 3.
