Braves' six-run third accounts for 6-3 win over Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Matt Adams and Danny Santana each drove in two runs during a six-run third inning, and Julio Teheran survived three solo home runs as the Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series.
The Braves had lost four of their previous five games coming into their first series in Anaheim since 2011. The Angels fell for the fifth time in six games.
The Angels also lost their best player Monday. Center fielder Mike Trout, a two-time American League MVP, will be out six to eight weeks after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb sliding during the Sunday game at Miami.
Trout will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair the tear. This is the first major injury in the 26-year-old phenom's major league career. He was leading the AL in on-base percentage and slugging percentage, and he was tied for the lead in home runs with 16.
Julio Teheran (4-4) went 6 1/3 innings and struck out five. He was touched for solo shots by Andrelton Simmons, Albert Pujols and Luis Valbeuna.
Teheran ran into trouble just once outside of the home runs. With one out in the seventh, he hit catcher Martin Maldonado and allowed singles by Cliff Pennington and Eric Young Jr. to load the bases.
Jose Ramirez relieved Teheran and got Cameron Maybin to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the rally.
Angels starter Ricky Nolasco (2-5) is among the league leaders in home runs allowed, but he was touched for six runs in the third on a series of well-placed hits and a physical and mental error by his defense.
Adams, recently acquired from St. Louis, sliced a ground-rule double to drive in a pair in the third, and Santana doubled to right for two more.
With Nolasco gone after 2 2/3 innings, five Angels relievers held the Braves to one hit and struck out nine in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Simmons' home run to center, his fifth of the season. Simmons extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Braves sent 11 batters to the plate in the third. All six runs came with two outs, and four of the runs were unearned.
The Angels got back-to-back home runs by Pujols and Valbuena in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3. It was the seventh homer of the season for Pujols and the 598th of his career. Valbuena hit his third of the year.
