Recap

RANGERS 3, CAPITALS 1: Rookie Chris Kreider scored the game winner seven minutes into the third period as host New York edged Washington in the opener of their Stanley Cup second-round series.

Kreider sent the Madison Square Garden crowd into a tizzy after Washington botched a defensive change, allowing Kreider to gather a Derek Stepan pass and streak down the left wing before firing a low slapshot past the glove hand of Capitals netminder Braden Holtby. It was the second goal in three games for the 21-year-old, who only joined the club for the start of its first-round series against Ottawa.

Brad Richards extended the lead exactly 90 seconds later, collecting the puck at the side boards before skating in uncontested and slapping it between Holtby's pads. The Rangers held on from there.

Following a scoreless first period, the Capitals had a great opportunity to break the deadlock when they were awarded a lengthy two-man advantage midway through the middle frame. Alexander Semin came closest to scoring, his wrist shot clanking off the crossbar at the end of the power play.

New York finally struck at 12:38 of the period. Artem Anisimov rushed into the play from from the Rangers bench, fought off Washington defenseman Mike Green and swept a wraparound past Holtby.

Washington drew even with 3.5 seconds remaining in the frame, as Jason Chimera broke toward the goal and redirected a Brooks Laich saucer pass between the pads of Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin, who led the team with 38 regular-season goals, didn't register his first shot Saturday until early in the third period. ... Lundqvist made 17 saves to preserve the win, while Holtby stopped 11 shots in defeat. ... Neither team had more than six shots in any period, and only five players registered more than one shot on goal.
