Recap

Pirates 6, Brewers 5: Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer and James McDonald pitched six strong inning as visiting Pittsburgh took the rubber game from Milwaukee.

Garrett Jones, Rod Barajas and Clint Barmes each hit solo home runs and Neil Walker recorded three hits for the Pirates, who jumped back above .500 at 27-26.

Pittsburgh took the lead with the long ball, getting to rookie Michael Fiers (1-1) in the fifth. McDonald led off with a single and looked like he would be stranded until McCutchen came up with two outs and drove a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left-center for his ninth homer and a 3-2 lead.

Jones made it back-to-back blasts, reaching down for a breaking ball and driving it out to right-center.

Fiers surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings while walking one and striking out eight.

McDonald (5-2), who has allowed three runs or less in each of his 11 starts this season, was charged with three runs — one earned — and four hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Barmes’ solo homer in the ninth turned out to be a key insurance run, as Joel Hanrahan allowed a homer to Brooks Conrad in the ninth before getting the final three outs for his 14th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK
: Nyjer Morgan hit a solo homer in the sixth and Martin Maldonado hit the first homer of his career, a solo blast off Juan Cruz, in the seventh for Milwaukee … Brewers LF Ryan Braun (hip, Achilles) sat out for the second straight day … The Pirates sat 3B Pedro Alvarez, who is in the midst of an 0-for-18 slump.
