Recap
Reds 4, Braves 3: Brandon Phillips drilled two homers, including a 422-foot shot to dead center off major-league ERA leader Brandon Beachy, as the host Reds won their fourth straight.
Phillips turned on a belt-high fastball for his first-inning blast, putting Cincinnati on top 2-1. Zack Cozart’s third-inning solo shot stretched the lead and Phillips followed with a fourth-inning solo homer of his own.
That gave the Reds seven homers in the series' first two games, accounting for all their runs.
Mat Latos (3-2) went seven innings for the victory, fanning eight.
Aroldis Chapman, arrested Monday while driving 93 mph on a suspended
license, worked around a ninth-inning error for his second save.
Beachy (5-2) fell for the first time since his season debut. His ERA rose from 1.33 to 1.77.
The fireworks started immediately as Atlanta’s Michael Bourn drilled a line drive over the right-field wall for his third leadoff career homer. Bourn also homered in the eighth to cut the deficit to one and finished with three hits on the night, breaking out of a 1-for-17 slump.
The Braves have scored just eight runs in losing three of their last four.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Freddie Freeman, who leads the Braves with seven homers and 32 RBIs, went 1-for-4 and is now 2-for-16 in his last four games. … Atlanta played without third baseman Chipper Jones, who missed his fourth straight game with a bruised left calf, and catcher Brian McCann, held out with flu symptoms and a mild fever. ... Chapman has recorded at least one strikeout in each of his 19 appearances so far this season.
