Recap
Orioles 3, Mariners 1 (11): Adam Jones hit a two-run tiebreaking homer in the top of the 11th to lift visiting Baltimore to its 15th consecutive extra-inning victory, the second-best streak in major-league history.
Nate McLouth singled with one out off Josh Kinney (0-3) and Jones followed with his game-winning blast to left to move the Orioles within a half-game of the New York Yankees in the American League East. Jim Johnson got the final three outs for his 45th save as catcher Taylor Teagarden threw out Michael Saunders trying to steal second to end the contest.
Luis Ayala (5-4) retired Franklin Gutierrez on a fly ball with the bases loaded to end the 10th as Baltimore concluded a three-game sweep. The Orioles won in 18 innings on Tuesday and only the 1949 Cleveland Indians (17) have won more consecutive extra-inning contests.
Seattle’s Felix Hernandez and Baltimore’s Joe Saunders both pitched eight strong innings. Hernandez struck out eight and allowed one run and six hits. Saunders gave up one run and five hits.
Baltimore struck first when Mark Reynolds delivered a two-out single in the top of the fourth. Seattle tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a one-out homer to left by Gutierrez.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle is 5-9 in extra innings after the back-to-back losses. … The Orioles promoted 19-year-old RHP Dylan Bundy early Wednesday morning. Bundy was the fourth overall selection of the 2011 baseball draft. … Seattle went 17 innings without a run until Gutierrez’s homer. The Mariners were blanked for the final 14 innings of Tuesday’s 18-inning loss.
