Recap

Drew Pomeranz pitched five shutout innings in his major-league debut to help the Colorado Rockies to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

The left-handed Pomeranz (1-0) gave up just two hits and two walks and struck out two. The highly regarded 22-year-old prospect was part of the package Colorado received from Cleveland in exchange for starter Ubaldo Jimenez.

Eric Young Jr. stole three bases and Ty Wigginton homered in the fourth off Edinson Volquez (5-5) as Colorado won while using a patchwork lineup. Troy Tulowitzki (hip), Carlos Gonzalez (back), Todd Helton (back) and Mark Ellis (neck) were all held out with ailments.

Jason Hammel pitched four innings of two-hit relief for his first save of this season and third of his career. Joey Votto homered off Hammel in the ninth for Cincinnati’s run.

Volquez allowed two runs and four hits in five innings.

The Rockies remembered 9/11 victims prior to the contest and festivities included a flyover by the 120th Fighter Squadron Red Eyes.
