The Detroit Red Wings continue their push for the playoffs as they sit two points outside of Wild Card position, but they’ll have to go through a tough Carolina Hurricanes team tonight.
The Hurricanes, NHL odds favorites, have been one of the hottest teams in the league over the past couple weeks, going 6-1-1 in their last eight games, led by Sebastian Aho with 18 points in 13 games this month.

The Carolina Hurricanes suffered a rare regulation loss on Tuesday as they fell 4-1 to the Penguins, marking the first time the Canes did not pick up at least a point since March 12 — a span of seven straight games where they went 6-0-1.
Sebastian Aho also had his own six-game point streak snapped in the loss — a run where the Hurricanes forward put up six goals and 12 points. Aho has been on fire all month and one of the hottest goal scorers in the league going back to mid-February, which is why I’ll take him to find the back of the net tonight as my best bet.
Aho has scored in three of his last six games, notching six total tallies over that span thanks in large part to a hat trick against the Capitals last Friday. Going back to February 19, the center has scored in nine of 19 games, while his 12 goals over that span rank tied for sixth-most in the NHL.
He should get plenty of looks tonight against a Detroit Red Wings team that has fallen off a cliff since late February. The Red Wings are 3-9-1 over that span while giving up 4.15 gapg (31st) and controlling just under 46% of expected goals and 43% of shot attempts at 5-on-5 over that span.
My best bet: Sebastian Aho Over 0.5 goals (+135 at PROLINE+)

The Hurricanes look like the slam-dunk choice to me on the moneyline given that they’ve been hot while the Red Wings are sinking fast due to their porous defense. Carolina has allowed two goals or fewer in 11 of its last 15 contests, so Detroit likely won’t be able to outscore its defensive issues tonight.
I also like the Under on 6.5 goals to round out the parlay because of that stingy Carolina defense. The Canes own the fifth-best defense in the NHL this season at 2.66 gapg and have cashed the Under in four of their last five games.

- The Canes opened as the home favorite at -240 and have seen their edge increase ahead of puck drop, sitting closer to -275 at most books by Thursday afternoon. Obviously not the best bang for your buck, but I see no reason to go against the grain here, as the Red Wings have been one of the worst teams in the league this month (.292 P%, 30th), while the Hurricanes have been one of the best (.731 P%, sixth).
- The total opened at 6 goals with some books sliding up to 6.5 this afternoon. If you can lock in at 6.5, the Under is the clear play here. Detroit has scored three goals or fewer in 10 of its last 13 outings, while Frederik Andersen, Carolina’s likely starter, owns a 1.34 GAA through six starts in March.
- The Hurricanes have allowed two goals or fewer in each of their last six home games, giving up just seven total tallies over that span.
