The Washington Capitals close out their five-game road trip with a matchup against the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday night.

The Flames are home favorites on the NHL odds board against the Capitals, but both enter this game looking for their third straight win. They’re also both right on the cusp of the playoff picture in their respective conferences.

The Calgary Flames were sellers at the deadline but they’ve been able to stay alive in the playoff race, even if by just a thread. After three straight losses to the Panthers, Hurricanes, and Avalanche, Calgary has bounced back with wins over Vegas (4-1) and Montreal (5-2).

The Flames would have to leapfrog the Wild and Blues to catch the Golden Knights for a playoff spot, but stranger things have happened.

The Washington Capitals find themselves in a similar position, albeit a bit better. They didn’t have high expectations this year under first-year coach Spencer Carbery, but they’re just a few points out of a playoff spot.

Both teams sold at the deadline, but that hasn’t mattered in recent games. One of the key pieces in Calgary is first-line center Nazem Kadri. He signed through the end of the decade so he’ll be a part of the Flames for a while.

Kadri leads the Flames in both points (59) and assists (36) this season while ranking third with 23 goals in 67 games. After a slow start to the season with just one assist in his first eight games, the centerman has 58 points in his last 59 games and hasn’t gone more than two contests without a point.

He’s currently riding a three-game point streak and has recorded a point in 13 of 18 games since the All-Star break.

We’re taking Nazem Kadri to record a point as our best bet and we’re going one better for our SGP. The Flames forward broke out of a six-game drought with a goal in Saturday’s win over the Canadiens. He previously had six goals in seven games before that from February 15 to March 2.

We’re also going with the Flames to win on home ice. They're 18-5-1 at home while the Capitals are 15-15-4 on the road. 

Furthermore, the Flames have a bit of a rest advantage as this is Washington’s fourth game in six nights — all on the road. The Flames fell victim to that against the Avalanche in their fourth game in six nights with travel last week.

The Flames odds are at -130 after opening at a much shorter price in the -150 range. In turn, Washington's odds are down to +110 after opening closer to +130.

The total is set at a flat 6 with the Over slightly favored at -115 and the Under at -105.
