If SF had scored a TD on their opening drive in OT, and KC then also scored a TD, they would have gone for two to try and win the game, knowing SF would get another “walk off” possession. I’d imagine this is how most coaches will play this moving forward.
KC spent multiple weeks discussing the new playoff OT rules starting at the beginning of training camp:
We talked through this for two weeks,” Jones said. “How we was going to give the ball to the opponent; if they scored, we was going for two at the end of the game. We rehearsed it.”
The 49ers did not do the same. Multiple San Francisco players said after the game that they were not aware that the overtime rules are different in the playoffs than they are in the regular season, and strategy discussions over how to handle the overtime period did not occur as a team. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead said he learned the details of the postseason rule when it was shown on the Allegiant Stadium jumbotron during a TV timeout after regulation. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk said he assumed the 49ers asked to receive when they won the toss because that’s what you do in the regular season, when a touchdown wins the game. “I guess that’s not the case. I don’t really know the strategy,” Juszczyk said.

This is having your team ready at the granular level. Obviously, Shanahan isn’t there yet or he doesn’t see his players as equals and picks and chooses what info he deems fit to share with them. Either way, it speaks to his coaching style and might explain why he keeps coming up short in these games.

At least he makes these games. He dragged a lifeless Jimmy G to a Super Bowl and now has also made it with the 2nd year last pick of the draft. Could possibly made it last year as well if not being down to his fourth sting quarterback. The decision to receive or defer is not something you drill with the team. It's a decision you make in the moment. The rule is extremely recent so there is no existing data to back either/or. Just theory.

And yet Andy Reid and his staff had the foresight to go over these rules and take a strategic position on it as early as training camp. So it clearly is something worth drilling with the team and not a decision you make in the moment.

Andy Reid >>> Kyle Shanahan,,,64 yrs vs 44 yrs...this should have been part of anyone's capping process for this game.
In 20 years from now, Kyle will be the flag football league's elite coach & guru while all the new nerdy analytical up and comers will be making similar mistakes to Dan Campbell, Mike McDaniels, Brandon Staley, etc,,, based on their overall inexperience as a head coach.
It's all part of the circle of life.
I personally think they should choose the skinny flags over the traditional cotton towel flags when the league pivots into the NFFL

reid says that but maybe he doesnt defer if his defense was on the field to end regulation like 9ers defense was, maybe thats why shanahan received first or maybe he didnt want his qb on the bench that long and wanted to break mahomes rhythm.

Not always about age and experience. Sometimes it’s about personality, innate wisdom, and how person sees and treats others. Not sure you can learn or teach that. Some people gots it and others don’t. Andy has the people-skill and emotional intellect, at least with non-family members, and Kyle is missing a key ingredient, though it’s hard to put the finger on it.

Many years ago, Andy Reid was also being called a great coach that couldn't ever win the big game...he choked away many winnable games with the Eagles...he learned from his mistakes and improved as a head coach.
That plus his vision to draft Mahomes when no one else in the league saw his raw talent like Reid did...and now the rest is history.

He said the staff went over it. He also said this in hindsight. Everyone is correct after the fact. There is nothing to go over with the team. It's a very new rule a d nobody knows what they will do for sure until faced with said decision. I repeat, there is no data to support what is right or wrong. I believe this is the first time it has come up.

Andy is just built different. Not knowing either personally,if I had to pick the person I wanted to play for, not the coach but the person, I pick Andy Reid.
You know how it goes though. To the victor goes the spoiled and the victor is who writes the story. If the Chiefs lose, we would be hearing about how they're falling off. Kelce us fat and old. And out of control for confronting Reid on the sideline. Thus was a defensive battle. Both offenses struggled. In a game like this, you have to give the edge to the baby goat.

The point is, the Chiefs had a plan in place and everyone on the team knew about it. SF - if they had a plan - no one on the team knew it. The players learned the OT rule from the jumbotron after regulation. It’s all about preparation. Not sure what you don’t understand here

Players do not need to know. They are worker bees. Shanahan is the queen bee. He's the one that should know n he draw plays and decisions for his workers to run it.
The right play is to go on 4th n get that TD to force the 2 points play if Andy wants to roll that way. It's though enough to get a TD, I'll triple down on your fail 2 points conversion. This would put the spread at play where both bettors and fans could win on both sides.
Shanahan was playing for the third possession. He forgot who's on the other side for QB.
Who takes it harder? Shanahan does.
Ok, with after the fact scenario.
They made a FG, they lose.
If they miss the FG, KC wins with a FG. They still lose. Which would be a better case for shanahan? The coach can then say he made a decision to win the game and press pressure would of been off of his head. Now he has to eat it till the next ride.

Players don’t need to know? Well Andy Reid has 3 lombardi trophies to Shanahan’s 0… so maybe including all his players on the team strategy is part of the winning culture he’s created. And yes, Shanahan’s players are clearly just “worker bees” with no super bowl rings

Think about it. Why should you need to know the new ot rule? If the coach tells me to go fetch a TD, that's all I need to know.
Oh right, I need to know so I can go explode on Andy Reid like kelce right?
Now tell us again Young woman, as a player, by knowing that new ot rule, what can a player do to gain his advantage from it?

All things being equal, (turnovers, statistics) coaching seemed to be the main factor that tipped the balance...KC had a capable coaching staff, SF had blundering jackass Shannahan.

If you think there’s nothing to be gained from collaborating with your players and including them on something as important as “Overtime in Super Bowl rules and strategy”, I don’t think I can help you, young man.

Spagnolo dialed up the perfect blitzes at the most important moments in the game to keep SF from settling for 3s.
Spags deserves a ton of credit for having the necessary testicular fortitude late in the 4th and in OT...Purdy simply had no chance on those 3rd down plays.
The halftime adjustments he made are undeniable.
This is the same Spags who game planned the perfect Defensive scheme that stopped Brady in the Superbowl from going 19-0.
He will likely go down in NFL history as the GOAT for Defensive Coordinators, and well deserved

Good to know but doesn't change the way them players will play by knowing that changed it rule.
I agree collaboration for everything else like if you get a pick in the end zone and don't think you can run out to the 25, take a knee in the end zone instead.
Those you need to know.
But for this new ot rule? I still don't see how a player needs to know when the only decision matters is the coach winning the toss gets to make that decision.

During Hardman's postgame interview with NFL Network, Mahomes interrupted with a hilarious revelation about the moment. “Can I tell a quick funny story?” said Mahomes, “I threw a touchdown to this dude (Hardman) to end the game.He looked at me and had no idea, and I said dude, we just won the Super Bowl.
Truth is like poetry. And most people fn hate poetry.
