Making a trip over to the UK. Going to be in London, and other areas of England and Scotland.
Any locals that can give me advice on Bookie shops it would be greatly appreciated. I know they are everywhere - but where are the better ones - I guess the ones that would resemble a Vegas sportsbook where I can sit and watch a game etc....
Thanks in advance.
I never met a hater better than me. I am on twitter

There's a Betfred bookmaker shop in Leicester square, Central London which has a very calm/relaxed feel about the place and is my personal fave shows all the main European Football games live i.e. Friday German Bundesliga action, The Saturday Spanish football matches and Sunday Premier League matches, They cannot show the Saturday Premier League action on live T.V. over here due to broadcast reasons etc.
However outside of London the Betfred shops tend to not generate as much action and will usually only show horse racing in the shop. I would advise betting with William Hill or Ladbrokes outside of London as they tend to generate more customers which forces them to show Football matches in there shops and they tend to have better/sharper odds. Paddy Power is also fairly decent and they have some good money back specials but that place is more for the new/recreational gambler.

** The Betfred shop in Leicester Square, Central London offers comfortable seating where you can sit and watch the game however from time to time you will have to come across some Macedonian or Chinese fella who loses the plot having lost a big sum playing on the roulette machines we have over here.

Super! Im staying very close to Leicester Square. Probably a 2-5 minute walk! I will be at this place soon. Thanks for the tip. Cant believe they cant show the games on Saturday - but I plan on going to a game anyway.
Any tips on getting tickets to games? Is it like here where I can just go to the stadium to get tix? Was going to ask in soccer forum too, but as long as I have your attention....
Thanks

I'm not sure regarding the tickets however over here the home team has customers who purchase season tickets which means getting tickets for the home team part of the stadium is slim depending on which team you want to go and see, If It's an established Premier League side aka United, City, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool your best bet would be to inquire for tickets in the away end. If you get the time pop down to the stadium a day or two before the match and see what the situation is, You may get lucky.

also a very nice Betfred up in Chinatown on Gerrard Street
WilliamHill are by far the most common they have these ATM type machines in some of their stores where you can up to the machine and bet on most of their markets they have on offer I used to use them for hockey and American football but there's a lot of markets unavailable on them like team totals and such in which case you have to go online

Thanks for the advice guys. Im really just looking for a place to hang while the family goes shopping or something I dont want to do. Its really just for the novelty of it more than anything else.
As far as the games I hope to go to....
West Ham at home, QPR at home, Chelsea at home, Arsenal at home, and ManU at home. Might be lofty goals, but Im willing to pay for it. Im not going all the way over there to let money get in the way of me going to the games.
Thanks again for the advice.

Went a couple years ago with my family and sisters family. Really wanted to go to a premier league game and didn't want to worry about getting tickets there (needed 8 tickets) so we got them online from one of many ticket brokers.
Bit pricey, but we got em, West Ham, great time and experience. Still not sure if we could have got them at the stadium, but looked pretty sold out.

vanzack, i wouldnt watch a game in a betting shop, there'll be no sound for a start because the shop you';re in will have commentary on horse and dog races and people will be playing "fruit" machines,
a betting shop is nothing like a sportsbook you're used to here, you;d be better off going to a sports bar, the sports cafe on haymarket is really good.
and you wont be able to see tottenham, chelsea, arsenal etc unless you want to pay over the odds, home games sell out to members of said clubs.

I have kind of figured out that member thing with the big clubs. Going to Chelsea vs Tottenham and know I will be paying for those. Dont care though. Have to go.
Im getting the picture of the shops - place the bet and then move on to watch the games. I was hoping for more. I dont really have to place bets there - I can easily do it online for better odds - was just hoping to have an experience. I will check it out but keep my expectations low.
There isnt one that is the mecca of shops there? One that is nicer than all the rest? I assume there isnt, but will ask anyway.

They don't even have games on in most of the shops in downtown London. The room is about 300 sq feet from what I found.
Checkout Churchill's Bunker Museum when you're there. It's an incredible experience.
Not a local but spent 2 weeks in London and saw some pretty incredible sights. Glad to list if you're interested.
Thanks. Will check out that museum too.
Please do list if you have further tips. Going with the family for 14 days split between London and north. Will be in London for about 8 days - so anything you got that is outside of the typical touristy stuff would be great.

Are you staying on or close to Hyde Park? Go there for dinner. Interior food is not very good.
London is very touristy, in fact that's what holds the city together. There are some things which I'm sure you know to see but it's really an educational experience, especially if you have young ones. - well worth the yap of world travelers.
1. Once you arrive walk the streets and take in the architecture block by block. It is specatacular at every turn.
2. London Tower is yes tourist but if you leave London without touring it then well, you haven't taken in London.
3. Windsor. Hire a car and drive out to the Queen's palace. A private guide cannot speak to you unless he knows he is not being heard. (They know). You will see the changing of the guards if ya leave in the morning.
4. If your driver is good he will know the surrounding castles on the way back from Windsor. They contain no tourists and you will experience a private view of what life and royalty was all about. The surrounding castles will take you back in time.
5. Churchill underground for sure. Won't believe your eyes once you are deep inside of the bunker.
6. Stone Henge is a failure, skip that.
7. Heathrow is the shittiest airport on the planet. Prepare for confusion and one security check point after another. Been through there 4x.
8. Chelsea is playing home grab the train and go see them. Beautiful stadium. Stick with the Australians outside of the match - locals dicks.
9. A regular cab driver that you befriend is also key. They know and will tell you things about London that nobody knows.
10. Walk the streets of London at night as well. Quiet, safe and beautiful.
11. All of the no gun police in London is a crock. They carry MP-5's underneath those jackets.
Have fun. One of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe.

The OPEN Market in London a mile or two from Hyde Park on Sundays is incredible. Vendors from all over the world selling prized antiques, fresh food, paintings, you name it it's there.

people who frequent betting shops are like people who travel on buses here, nuff said.
u should go to a racetrack and see how real live bookmakers ply their trade, I know you like your numbers, thats what I'll be doing when I go back in a couple of months. best horse race track is sandown south of london and wimbledon for dogs.
cultural stuff, dont know what floats your boat but you might like the museum of moving image, the tate modern, take a boat trip on the thames,
search comes up with some good ideas aswell
pm me if you want specifics on things
have fun, and dont stand up in the chelsea end if tottenham score, you will get beaten up.

I think the open market you are talking about in #12 is Portobello Mkt? That is definitely on the radar - love to go to markets when I travel.

Yeah - I know the deal with supporting teams from certain sections. I wont be able to support Tottenham if I am in a Chelsea section - so I will try to buy away tix.
Will definitely check out a horse track.
