Ok so I coach a YMCA team 1st round of playoffs today
Were in triple OT and both teams are in double bonus
Were up 4, my player goes for the steal which was a clean steal and gets foul called he walks away says something and get T'd up.
The ref gives him 2 ft's for technical which he hits both = 2pt game
Then he takes the 2ft's for the double bonus, and I thought the 2nd shot would be live, he hit first missed 2nd.
But they lined it up like a technical and gave them the ball back and they hit a buzzer beater. I was trying to talk with refs before the 2 double bonus ft shots and they told me to back off and wouldnt hear it. Am I right in this situation

If a referee deems a foul extremely aggressive, or that it did not show an attempt to play the ball, the referee can call a more severe foul, known as an unsportsmanlike foul in international play, a flagrant foul in the NBA, or an intentional foul in NCAA basketball. This foul is charged against the player, and the opponent gets two free throws and possession of the ball afterwards. Unlike technical fouls, the player fouled must shoot the awarded free throws.

They made the correct call..In fact, the same situation happened at the end of the Villanova-Pitt game yesterday. The technical free throws are always first as most everyone knows...Because they get the ball back after the foul free throws, they should have the lane cleared because there is no rebound. So they shoot 2 for the tech, then 2 for the foul AND the ball...

I only ref high school bball but the call is correct. I would have had the player who was fouled shoot the first 2 by himself then the player shoot the technical shots by himself as well then put the ball in play. Not sure why the players would ever be lined up in that situation...shoulda stayed behind half court for all 4 foul shots

Sorry, but it is correct. Two shots for theTech, two for the foul, and the ball back. As stated above, the line should have been cleared for all 4 foul shots, then they get possession. Sucks to lose a game like that...

I agree with you. In most games I have seen if team A has the ball and is fouled, then somewhere in there is a technical on team B, then they should get the 2 free throws for the tech, 2 free throws for the original foul and then you get the ball out of bounds. It doesn't sound right they get the ball after that, I agree with you.

Why is your kid going for a steal up 4? Youre not behind - you are winning..Play sound defense - keep everyone in front of you - if they score, they have to foul. Learn from this and teach end of game situations - I am a former coach myself...You live and learn....

Agreed, the intent is to make the opponent bleed the clock even if they score, defintely do not foul. How old are the kids you were coaching?? Maybe just a lack of focus, especially if they are younger..

No doubt......I hope the kid who got T'd up found a seat on the bench....no reason for kids to be lipping off to refs to the point of getting a technical.
