The most opportune time to buy a half point is when one team is favored by 2.5, 3, 6.5, or 7. This is because many games end in a 3 or 7 point difference and the extra half point can either turn a loss into a draw or a draw into a win.
Agreed!
But most books, knowing this, will make you pay a premium to move off that number. The books aren't gonna let you do this without taking a little more for themselves. This isn't a charity.
of course they are going to take a little more for themselves.............my point is that is not as expensive as Tressel has stated.
its a small price to pay for insurance on a 5K wager for instance.

"in the long run I will be at a disadvantage"...........totally absurd comment. For spot bettors such as myself it is one of the MOST powerful, financially rewarding srategies out there.

Alien-1, I think you might be mistaking winning more often with winning more money. I agree with you that moving off key numbers will give you more wins/pushes. However, those losses (at -120+ to -130+ in some cases) will out weigh those wins/pushes in the long run.
To use a poker scenario: the person who wins the most pots usually doesn't win the most money.
Not that you asked, but if you lay 120, you can buy a half point at most sports books. If you were prepared to bet a game against the spread anyway, is the extra half point a good value? Laying 110, the house edge for a random picker is 4.45%, including ties. Laying 120, the house edge with the half point is 4.50%. So, buying a half point is marginally not worth the price.
The value of buying a half point in football depends a great deal on the point spread, because some margins of victory are much more likely than others. The only time it is worth buying the half point in the NFL is off of a point spread of 3. Unfortunately, the sports books know this too, and either won’t let you do it off of 3 or will charge you additional juice (more than -120) that no longer makes it a favorable proposition.

Figures... first time I jump on the BigTenSucksInBowlGames bandwagon and one of their teams shows up! or maybe Miami didn't show up... I don't know.. I'm learning a few things...
Don't bet against God (Utah, BYU, and SMU)...
Don't bet against the midwest, corn-fed, white farmboys...
Don't bet on a team with a young QB who has tossed 15+ INTs and his best offensive lineman out...
Don't bet against the team that has a 1,000+ yd rusher who also has 15+ TDs and an offense that has 6 tightends...
with that said...
Idaho -1????
Nebraska -3???
