Beat the spread even if you lose the game is always a win for the head coach. Fired Colorado coach Dan Hawkins always knew the spread. When he was at Boise St., he would go for two late in the game to try and cover the spread even when he was up by 30+. I remember one game when he missed a 2 pt. conversion with four minutes left in the game and tried an onside kick to get the ball back to cover the spread. That was not an isolated incident either. So karma is what happened to him at Colorado. Hawkins' predecessor Dirk Koetter also played to the spread at Boise and he parlayed that into a HC job at Arizona St. Karma got him too.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this comment. Boosters are basically just millionaire/billionaire degens that like having action on their teams. They don't research $hit they know that eventually their team will cover and they appreciate it when the coach will do what they can to cover. They have the bankroll damn near all of us could only dream of so the money isn't really the object here but the action. I assure you that if a coach covers more spreads then there is more money poured into the program by the boosters.
